iSight (FaceTime) Camera Not Working

Hi all,

I have a 2019 iMac 27" running Catalina 10.15.4 (up to date).

The built-in camera simply will not work. Any app that uses it, such as FaceTime, Photo Booth, Zoom, Skype etc. just shows a blank, black screen with no feed from the camera. There are no error messages appearing. Also, the green LED light does not come on - it's as if the camera is totally dead. I have never used the camera before, and the Mac was brand new on purchase in November 2019.

I have tried the following suggested solutions:

  • Restarting the iMac several times (it is turned off overnight anyway)
  • Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
  • In Terminal, typing sudo killall VDCAssistant and entering the admin password
  • In Activity Monitor, quitting all open apps or utilities that might be using the camera
  • Ensuring all apps using the camera have relevant permissions in System Preferences
  • Logging in with a Guest user account
  • Booting the Mac in Safe Mode
  • I have also run Diagnostic Mode by holding the D key on startup - this found 0 issues

None of the above have worked, there is no change and the problem still persists.

Can anybody suggest any alternative fixes? This is really frustrating.

Thanks.

Okay, please do the following.

Please navigate to the Mac App Store and download the free version of EtreCheck OR please click www.EtreCheck.com where you will find the app. Once you downloaded the free app and created the report please post it as your reply to this message. In order to post it, please use the following link for more detailed instructions on how to correctly include the results:

We can then look for obvious issues that may be causing your problem.

Whew, Catalina certainly has it's share of problems * the new hardware seems suspect too.

Have seen Brand new Macs need a Reinstall of the OS. :(

EtreCheck is a simple little app to display the important details of your system configuration and allow you to copy that information to the Clipboard. It is meant to be used with Apple Support Communities to help people help you with your Mac.

Pastebin is a good place to paste the whole report if you capture the URL while there…

Workable but harder for me to work with...the Note tool on the bottom of this editor's toolbar, as shown in the image, to copy and paste the output from EtreCheck.

Hi. I had the same issue with four Apple Macbook Pro 13 inch laptops (2016). I followed all the same troubleshooting steps, with no success as you discovered. The problems started in March after updating to Mac OS 10.15.4 "Catalina". In 2 cases the FaceTime cameras were disabled, and would not start, and in another 2 cases the cameras would attempt to start, but then they would shut down. After a lot of discussion with Apple Enterprise Support, they could not find a solution, and they agreed to replaced the main logic boards and the cameras (which includes the whole screen and lid). Problems solved, but a very expensive proposition to fix 4 laptops. I have 120 of the same model in my school, and I anticipate more failures as we roll out "Catalina".

I hope this helps somebody.

I don't see anything wrong, however you are not backing up the computer. At the very lease you need to begin using Time Machine or you will lose your data. Please purchase a external HD (recommend a 2-4 TB model) like a https://eshop.macsales.com/shop/owc-mercury-elite-pro and then begin using Time Machine. By ignoring backing up your computer this is a guarantee you lose data including photos, music, important financial information, movies, and other data files not to mention applications you may have paid for.

As for your problem with the FaceTime Camera, please give AppleCare a call, if you do not know their phone number please use AppleCare contact Information
