Can I make changes to my iCloud contacts and have those changes get to my iPhone contacts?

Brand new iPhone user here. So I have my contacts on my iPhone and backed them up to iCloud. Since I am old and would rather make changes on my computer with an actual keyboard, I edited my contacts in iCloud using a computer and exited out of iCloud. A little while later I go back into my iCloud account using a computer to make more changes and find out that my previous changes are gone and my iCloud contacts are once again as they are on my iPhone.

What happened?

Any advice would be appreciated.

As per the article https://support.apple.com/en-bw/HT205754

On iCloud.com or iCloud for Windows

After you turn on iCloud Contacts on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Mac, your contacts upload to iCloud. You can find and edit your contacts on iCloud.com or in iCloud for Windows. Any changes that you make automatically update on your other devices.

If you turn off iCloud Contacts on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Mac, your contacts won't delete from iCloud, they won't update automatically, and any changes you make won't update across your other devices.

Another possible reason is when you edit contacts details from a device , you have to click on done to save ( point number 3 in the article ) https://support.apple.com/en-in/guide/iphone/iph89a9c71d8/ios

In the same way from Mac https://support.apple.com/en-in/guide/contacts/adrbk1515/mac

As both devices are synced with iCloud by sign in with same Apple ID and password on the same network .
