iPad Pro 11 2020 (2nd gen) Battery Life

I have the 2020 (2nd gen) iPad Pro 11 256gb WiFi tablet. I’m not necessarily one that has many apple products, but I have purchased every iPad that has ever been released. At this point, this is completely anecdotal, but my battery life is no where near what I have remembered in the past. Most recently, based on using the iPad Pro 11 WiFi (2018 edition) even just a few days ago in basically the same routine each day, I’m noticing obvious declines. In looking at the battery settings, I do not see anything that particular sticks out as an app that is using battery more than normal, but it is just noticeable.

Typically, when I buy a brand new iPad I set it up as a new iPad, but I did restore this one from a cloud backup from my previous pro, but seeing there was no issues in my iPad Pro 2018, I’m not sure why that would be the reason.

I am curious if there are others noticing the same thing?

Thanks. Stay safe!

Thanks for the reply. Wow, your device is definitely taking a hit. In your situation, it sounds like an intensive app was left running overnight? Mine has been using the battery so much, I'm actually cutting mine off at night - something that I never did before. I may test it tonight, because if i lose 15% in standby mode, then something is definitely wrong.

I’m confused. Sometimes, web browsing takes 8/12% on 30% brightness...

but when I unplugged for a nights charge, the first 30minutes just took a percent, then the day when by I didn’t use it once until bedtime. And it when fast like if I times 10 the usage is definitely not get more than 5/6 hours.

i’m logging it with them, mentioning that I’d rather go to a store, so coronavirus depending. (UK). And I’m going to get Apple care as I always do. I have 14 notes days to add it on. And will enjoy the device and speak to them when it really just irritates me. But, I truly think it’s firmware. (I hope) it’s an awesome gadget. I’m gonna get the track pad I think.

Bro?

I am fully aware as to the model of iPad Pro to which this thread relates. My comments merely to serve to confirm that the described battery utilisation, producing a cumulative battery endurance of ~7.5 hours, is “typical” across for iPad Pro models running iPadOS 13.4.1.

No two iPad Users will have identical App installations or usage patterns - as such, where possible, it is necessary to provide a baseline from which to compare subjective performance measurement.

Apple always quote battery life as “up to” a specified figure - which will rarely be achievable in real world usage.

@LotusPilot

Well-said. My bad. I totally agree about idential app installiations/patterns, etc. I guess from the beginning, what I've tried to state is that I do use the same app installs (minimal) and I do use the same patterns every morning of my life, and from day 1, I could tell this specific model of the iPad was no where near what my previous ones have been.

Even when I went from the last Air to the first Pro, I could tell the battery took a slight dip, but it was understandable...bigger screen, faster processor, etc. I'm willing to make those sacrifices. But to go from the 2018 version to this version (which is arguably the most alike iPads ever), and to notice such a difference in battery is certainly unusual, and at least for me, hasn't been worth the upgrade.

It's a big deal on other forums as well. https://www.reddit.com/r/ipad/comments/fw9oqf/new_ipad_pro_2020_battery_issues/ and https://www.reddit.com/r/iPadPro/comments/fsx2dd/ipad_pro_2020_battery_drain/ just to name a few.

Like you have mentioned, I'm hoping this is related to the version of iPad OS, but since i've had this recent version on my previous iPad Pro 11 (2018 version) and it wasn't present there, then I'm thinking it's actually hardware related.

I shut down and stored my fully charged iPad pro 11 2020 256 wifi connected to my magic keyboard, and when I turned it on 2 or 3 days later, its battery was fully discharged. I did the same but with the magic keyboard not connected (the iPad in the 2018 iPad Pro smart cover) but stored alongside it and I found the iPad discharged again.

Hi,

glad I’ve come across this discussion. I’m getting my iPad Pro 2020 11 inch WiFi+cellar 128GB I believe tomorrow.

I’m trying to find out if I should drain the battery first and then charge it for 8 hours or charge it for 8 hours before first use?

Can anyone/does anyone know the best option to do? Thanks

Take care and stay safe!

You certainly don’t need (in fact, shouldn’t) initially discharge your iPad battery. The Li-ion battery chemistry is entirely different to earlier NiCad and NiMH batteries.

Li-ion should not be fully discharged - as doing so risks potential irreversible damage, through deep-discharge, if the battery is allowed to remain in a discharged state.

Likewise Li-ion batteries do not need to be fully charged to achieve maximum battery longevity - in fact, limiting the maximum charge to about 80% is kinder (long term) to the battery. That said, allowing iPad to manage the battery charge is the best strategy to preserve maximum battery life and longevity.

Totally agree. I've contacted Apple twice, and so far, very little help given on this issue. I've cut all background refresh off, which of course causes some apps not to function correctly, but it's just not even close. I like the form factor, but so far, probably my worst experience with an iPad - and i've had every single one they've made. I should have stayed with the 2018 iPad Pro 11. It's very frustrating that Apple is silent on the issue.

I have had the new iPad Pro 11 (2nd gen) for a couple of weeks and I am having the same experience. Battery started out at 7:30 this AM at 49%. I have looked at a few web pages and done a couple of emails. Total use of about an hour. At 10:30 my battery is at at 36%.

My iPad Pro 10.5 battery lasted for at least two days. This one only lasts a day at best. I’ve lost 2% of battery just writing this post (although I am using a Apple Magic Keyboard at the moment). Really disappointing.
