Macbook pro will not recognize external microphone

I am trying to connect an external microphone to my macbook pro with High Sierra OS. I have tried using a Y splitter with TRS female and TRRS male components into the headphone jack on my laptop. However, no matter what I do, my macbook WILL NOT recognize the external microphone. Does anyone have any experience getting their mac to recognize an external mic and is there a way to manually change it?

I see that you can't get MacBook Pro to recognize an external microphone, and I'm glad to help with this.

Set up audio devices in Audio MIDI Setup on Mac -- This article provides the information and steps that you need to use an external microphone with your MacBook Pro.

If this doesn't correct the problem, please answer the following questions:

Which version of MacBook Pro are you using, and which macOS is it currently on?
What model of microphone are you trying to connect?
