iPhone X: lock screen displaying “notifications” instead of contact name for iMessages

Has anyone experienced this?

Last night after my phone completely died, I plugged it in to charge and when it turned back on my iMessages started to display like the picture below.

Normally my phone displays individual contacts and “iMessage” or “2 iMessages”.

After this, I upgraded to the newest iOS 13.4.1. This seemed to solve the issue until my iPhone died again and required charging.

I have tried everything. All of my notifications are turned on, my preview is set to “only when unlocked”. I cannot figure out why this is happening or how to fix it and it is driving me crazy!

Please help me.

I believe Face ID has something to do with it because when I disable it, the contact name shows as well as the entire message. The only way I was able to fix this was to reset my settings. I hope this doesn’t continue to happen.

I like to keep Face ID on and only show a preview of messages while the phone is unlocked.

Is Face ID enabled and working correctly here?

Because if Face ID were working here, then the 2:23 image would not be showing as locked, if you're looking at the iPhone.

If the iPhone is not locked—the 2:23 image clearly shows locked—then you would see content from the notifications.

The 2:23 image shown at the top of this thread shows the iPhone is locked, so I'm not sure what's happening here. Face ID is not working to unlock the iPhone, maybe?

What's "tried everything"? Tried a reboot?

And as mentioned, message contents won't show until unlocked.

Maybe there's an issue with Face ID, as that would be unlocking when enabled?

That is not the problem. Before this, my iMessage would show a contact name example: Bob Smith instead of “notification”. It has nothing to do with my iPhone being locked.
