USB-C Power Delivery charging issues with Dell U3818DW monitors

I have a Dell U3818DW monitor that I'm using with a new Macbook Pro 16" 2019. When using it with the a USB-C cable there's an issue with the power delivery that over on the Dell forums, Dell is claiming it's an issue with the Mac OS software that was introduced with Mac OS Mojave. Here is their quoted response:

"There is not workaround to solve the incompatibility with the U3419W and U3818DW TPS6598E power delivery chip and Apple OS 10.14.3 and later. With the release of Apple OS Mojave 10.14.3 and later, Apple introduced a hardware incompatibility issue with our TPS6598E power delivery controller chip. When connected to the U3419W and U3818DW via the USB Type-C to C cable, you will see the following issues =

- Fully charged Apple MacBook constant "charm" sound due to waking and sleeping

- The monitor will display, "Scanning for Signal"

A firmware update to the TPS6598E power delivery controller chip will not correct these issues. There also will not be a hardware power delivery controller chip replacement to correct this incompatibility issue created by Apple. You will need to back down the Apple OS to High Sierra 10.13.6 or earlier"

What I'd like to know is if Apple engineers can either confirm or deny that this is an OS issue introduced with Mojave that results in an issue specifically with the TPS65982 power delivery chip.

Hey there,

I just read through this thread and I think this issue has been solved with the latest firmware update for the Dell U3818DW monitor, which I just purchased.

There's a new option in the monitors menu now which says:

USB-C Charging : On During Power Off

I was reading through the user manual here:

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/lit_files/350153.pdf

but didn't find the description of this feature anywhere, because it was probably added by the firmware update which can be found here:

https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-is/drivers/driversdetails?driverid=ctf4v&oscode=wt32a&productcode=dell-u3818dw-monitor

I'm having zero problems with this monitor, but I do NOT have an apple computer ( and I know this post is about Macbook Pro machine ) but I just wanted to point this out. I have a Lenovo Thinkpad T490 machine (https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/thinkpad/thinkpad-t-series/T490/p/22TP2TT4900) and am using it connected through the USB-C cable which came with the monitor and using the KVM switch for this keyboard:

https://www.logitech.com/en-us/product/k860-split-ergonomic-keyboard

and this mouse

https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Spectrum-Shifting-Personalized-Programmable/dp/B019OB663A

and the laptop wakes up and sleeps properly, using Windows 10.

Just wanted to comment about this, this firmware update was probably created to tackle stuff like being talked about in this thread

It seems it might be fixed on macOS 10.15.5

Have you tried it?

I'm considering buying this monitor, but this issue is pushing me back. The HP Z38c seems to be a strong alternative, but the 65W power output also pushes me back.

I'm not experiencing this issue on macOS 10.15.5 / MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019) with U3818DW. But I did configure "Prevent monitor from sleeping automatically when the display is off." as suggested here https://www.dell.com/support/article/en-us/sln318549/power-chime-noise-from-macbook-when-charging-via-usb-c-on-u3419w-or-u3818dw-monitors-while-the-macbook-is-in-sleep-mode?lang=en.

This issue is only occurs in sleep mode right? Because i bought this monitor anyway (build march 2020) and using it with a macbook 16" and i don't see any issue with sleep mode.

When i put it into sleep mode:

  • mac sleeps
  • Monitor : Scanning for Signal
  • Monitor: No Signal for USB-C
  • Monitor: Going into Power Save Mode

And both the laptop and monitor stay off .. i'm a missing something? What do i need to do to force this bug in the hardware of the dell

The exact wording in the on screen menus ("OSD") of the Dell U3818DW is: USB-C Charging {On During Power Off|Off During Power Off} and the meaning should be self explanatory. If one is connecting an Apple MacBook Pro (I have a Late 2016 15 inch model) by single cable video and power USB-C to USB-C one needs the option on. M3B106 doesn't solve the chime sound and display going in and out of sleep. Physically turning the monitor off at its power button isn't ideal because it disconnects it from the MacBook causing windows to move around if one is using the MacBook open for dual screen and access to the fingerprint reader for example.

Is it referring to Power on/off of the monitor itself?

I never ever turn my monitor off by actually pushing the on/off button ... so basically this setting doesn't make any difference to me I guess?

It's always charging my laptop through the usb-c, because I never turn the monitor completely off ... or does it stop charging when the *monitor* itself it goes to sleep mode when there's no signal from any of the connected devices?
