Sharing music in family, with different Apple ID’s, with family share plan.

I have an individual Apple Music plan, and am thinking about upgrading to family plan. I have already had problems with cross-pollination of devices when I got new iPhones for myself and my wife. We now have different Apple ID’s, but I don’t want the problems that we recently experienced. How does the family plan work?
