I've created a photo book in iPhotos and every time I go to BuyBook - I get message that says "error contacting online store". I have purchased books in the past with no problem - why is this happening now? I've rebooted my machine. Looked at settings for my apple account. I just can't figure it out! Is this a Covid thing? is the online store closed? Grrr. It's making me crazy.

Apple does no longer offer any print services. The Print Product stores have been closed more than a year ago. You now have to use third-party project extensions to order photo books from Photos. The project extensions are available in Photos 4 on macOS 10.14 Mojave or or Photos 5 in Catalina.
On an older system version save the PDF file of your Photo book and upload it to print service like Mimeo or Presto Photos to get the photo book printed.

Are you able to create a PDF file for that book? Try holding down the Option key and click on the Buy Book button. That will give you a PDF file that is the same as was uploaded to Apple when they were still offering print services.
If so there's a 3rd party book provider which used to do the printing for Apple as a sub-contractor, Mimeo, that will take PDF files created by iPhoto and Photos and print and bind books and calendars.
Also you can upload the PDF file to PrestoPhotos which can also print and bind books and calendars from iPhoto or Photos pdf files. They've been doing it for some time now.
