decrease the size of DMG on my macbook's hard drive

I am on Catalina

I have created a while ago a 19.56 GB Disk Image Volume, Mac OS Extended (Journaled) - password protected and hidden, named KDK

(see screenshot 1)

  • I deleted stuff from it and the files now use 7.8 GB
  • the Disk Image has 19.56 GB total and so 11.76 GB are free on the Disk image

I want to reduce the size of "KDK" Disk Image Volume on my hard drive to just 8 GB

I tried to reduce the size by :

  • DISK UTILITY > Image > Resize

it opens a Finder window to select the volume but the Finder does not show the "KDK" Disk Image Volume

Anybody could please help how to do that ?

I am desperate as I need more disk space on my 500 GB SSD and I can't free the 11 GB from my "KDK" Disk Image Volume.

Unmount the .dmg from the Desktop, then drag the .dmg file to the Trash and Empty. There is no partition you need to delete to get rid of the .dmg file. If you are looking at Disk Utility and see the .dmg file listed below a line separating it from the actual physical disks displayed above the line, then you should see an eject gadget to the right of the disk image's mounted entry. Click on the gadget to unmount it. Or drag the Desktop icon for the disk image to the Trash to eject it.

This is not possible to resize a disk image unless you created it as a sparseimage or sparsebundle. However, I believe neither of them can shrink but only expand.

What you can do is create a new disk image file that is smaller in size to which you can add the files in the old disk image file. After the files are transferred you can delete the old disk image file. Be sure you make the new disk image file large enough for all the files it will hold. An 8GB disk image file is not large enough for the 7.8GBs you want to transfer.
