When I purchased the new iPhone SE last week, there were two options in terms of activation. 1) Have apple activate it for you (need some info from your phone carrier), or 2) activate it yourself upon arrival.
I chose the latter option, and now am worried because I'm not sure the exact steps I need to do in order to get my new phone up and running. I'm assuming I need to remove the SIM card from my old iPhone 6S and insert it into my new iPhone SE before I can get up and running? Are there any detailed instruction on how to do this??
This is getting ridiculous. I have the same problem as Laura. Spent 22 hours last week transferring data to new se phone, removed data from old se for recycling, went to local Boost store. Very rude guy without a mask made we wait with no customers. Finally told me they didn’t have an but check back. He called Boost national and they didn’t have any. Had to give up on recycling for $30 credit and get Apple tech to help me restore old se until I can get new Sim card. Guy at Boost kept telling me to call this and that and I kept saying dude I don’t have phone or text service. Dumb as a rock and rude!
Now it’s week two and I have been on hold with Boost customer service for about an hour. Spoke with a nice lady in the Dominican Republic and then she put me on hold again. I am in limbo **** and blame Apple for this cluster@#@#.
Will return new phone if not resolved. I had Virgin for about 25 years. I just knew this forced change to Boost was going to be trouble! I don’t like change.
I had a sweet deal with Virgin 2 years ago where if I bought an Apple phone I received unlimited plan for $1 a month for one year and then $30 a month. I usually use wifi at home and cheap plan is fine.
Can anyone recommend a different carrier with a cheap monthly charge? Maybe try Sprint? Thanks.

There's a reason that cheap carriers are cheap. Personally, I'd stay with a regular carrier rather than an MVNO (network reseller) like Boost. Generally, of the major carriers the one that offers the best balance between being inexpensive and being decent has been TMobile. Sprint is usually not the cheapest and generally the worst. But, soon, they will be TMobile.
I bought the phone from Apple at list price. It doesn’t work. I’ve lost my refund of old phone. How can you say Apple not responsible. Don’t make me drive to your store and yell at everyone. I removed all data from old phone. I had to unpack return box and revert to old phone. First Apple tech was worthless. Second one did help me get old phone working. You lock your phones digitally. Nothing on your purchase page indicates I may need a new SIM card. There are MANY people with this same problem. Don’t tell me Boost not Apple responsible. That is a complete cop- out. I have a new IPad, now 2 iPhones and an IMac. If you won’t allow more time to package and recycle old phone for credit IF SIM cards from Walmart work, then you better be willing to allow return and complete refund. Otherwise I am done with your company.
My Virgin phone worked fine for 25 years on Sprint/Nextel network. T-Mobile is a good recommendation. I don’t need or use an expensive service. Used to get free phones working for Aerial bought by VoiceStream, Nextel (Boost was their pay as you go service), then Sprint/Nextel. Funny how they are all under one umbrella now!
VoiceStream people were nasty liars to our Florida legal dept., but there was a noticeable difference when they became T-Mobile and John L. took over. Now he is leaving, so....my neighborhood seems to get best coverage with Sprint.
Once you put a carriers SIM in your phone if it does not work with your unlocked iPhone (and you have given no indication it was locked) and can't get it to work with that SIM with your carrier that is beyond Apple's control. You said you had the same problem as Laura and she had to go through several SIMs before she finally got one that worked. Apple doesn't provide the SIM the carrier does. I had a friend who was with Sprint and he constantly went through SIM issues.
Again, unless your iPhone was locked and you got a message that it was locked to a carrier this is all on Boost.
Boost is out of sim cards for iphone se second generation both locally and nationally. Gonna try Walmart’s kit and make sure it includes the 516TQ for Boost activation. Tell me one more time why this is not Apple’s fault. Mr. Jobs is rolling in his freakin grave. Whatever happened to his mantra that nothing should take more than 2 clicks. Well, you are totally and completely wrong. If you bought a car would it be the manufacturers fault if you couldn’t find a gas station with a price you were willing to pay?
Apple sells phones, they don’t sell network access. There are dozens of cellular carriers that would like to have your business. You choose one of the least reliable carriers, and somehow your poor decision is Apple’s fault? Are you for real?
Just forget I asked. If I buy a new car I expect it to have an engine that works or at least be told I MAY need a new SIM card for God’s sake. Yeah I get it, nothing’s Apple’s fault. I won’t be back so just shake your head and forget it.
I had that same, sweet Virgin deal and that's how I ended up with Boost. My issues were finally resolved. I would assign some blame to both Boost and Apple. The original Boost person I called when my old SIM card didn't work thought the problem was with the Apple SE not being unlocked. When I called Apple the rep said the phone was unlocked. She speculated that the old SE SIM cards weren't compatible with the 2020 SE but didn't know. To me, this is information that Apple should have made widely known with a new product roll-out where a large source of customers was likely to be owners of the older SE phones.
My second Boost rep knew that I needed a new SIM card. They charged me $10 for it, which I thought was petty, but at this point I just wanted to use my new phone. When the card arrived I was able to activate the new phone online. I had one remaining issue: I could make phone calls and do everything else with the phone but it wouldn't receive calls. So fixing that took yet another 45-minute call to Boost but after that I've had no problems.
I will say that all of the Boost reps (who sounded like they were not native English speakers) and the Apple folks (who sounded American) were all polite, patient and spent a lot of time trying to resolve my issues. Unfortunately, they hadn't all been given enough information to do it.
For now I'll stick with Boost. It's a lot cheaper than the major carriers and years ago when I had Sprint I was hardly overwhelmed with their customer service when I needed it.
Sorry to bother everyone. I have only purchased one other IPhone in my life about 3 years ago...the original SE. It came with an inserted sprint sim card for Virgin mobile. Although it shipped from Apple, I may have ordered through a special linked deal with Virgin. Perhaps they had a contract or relationship with Apple to include the Sim card, so I guess I just expected my new phone would also be immediately workable. I agree the primary problem is now with Boost, but I think Apple bears some blame by not making this a little more clear when purchasing new phone direct.
Update: ordered 4-pack Boost sims from Walmart last night, requiring in-store pickup, which I wanted to avoid, but they cancelled my order at 3am. I guess they are out. I’ll try to be patient and wait. Good news is I seem to make good money everyday with my Apple stock. Did not mean to be offensive; just frustrated.
Thanks Laura and I agree. My Boost CI “friend” was in the Dominican Republic and while she waited on hold with Boost national we talked about our families being safe. One Apple help support was a nightmare. The second rep walked me through the process of resetting my old phone so I could reach doctors, family and friends, which I greatly appreciated.
What exactly was Apple supposed to inform you about? That since you had previously been a Virgin subscriber and had been moved to Boost that Boost might have problems with the SIMs they were using might have a problem with its information and would not work correctly with your iPhone? Again, how could Apple possibly include that information when you purchased an unlocked phone from them?
I got my SE yesterday and am on my third reinstallation and still cannot get it to activate on Verizon. The Sim card that came installed is the same serial number as in the existing, functional iphone. Attempting to get help from Apple or Verizon CS has been a day-long frustration. I've rebooted; pulled the cards; reinstalled them; swapped them; put them back; wiped and reinstalled the new iphone. Most frustrating - I got to some online verizon service that asked me to type in my Sim serial number and it told me the card was not compatible - even though it came installed and is literally the same card as in my old phone (a 2008 SE).
Sounds like the SIM that works with the old SE is not compatible with the new iPhone SE. Verizon supplies the SIM to Apple, you will need to get them to provide you with a newer one that works with your iPhone.
I had similar problem with switching from original SE to 2020 SE and the new phone from Apple did not come with a card. I’d been using Virgin Mobile which uses Sprint, but was switched to Boost, which also used Sprint as it was a legacy Nextel co., and it took me 3 weeks to find a Boost SIM card, but IPhone still does not function properly and each company blames the other, and everyone here just chastised me for thinking my new phone would come with a SIM card, when the only other smartphone I had ever purchased (the original SE) came with a card, but now I recall it was purchased through Virgin, so how was I to know. Bottom line, unless you do better than me expect several weeks of customer service **** (Apple customer care scheduled a recent call-back for tonight and last night but no one called. I still have a list of issues that all of Boost’s re-set codes would not fix, so Apple suddenly thinks it IS their issue. I had to unpack original phone I wiped clean, reset and use for several weeks until I found correct card 45 miles away and missed timeline for recycling old phone for credit from Apple, and now they sent a new recycle kit after last Apple support guy said to just keep it or throw out! I think they finally realize there are some unresolved bugs with new SE, but unfortunately no Apple lovers on this site will even CONSIDER that! At any rate, expect several more weeks of customer service **** on hold and one company blaming the other. At least I got my phone to stop blocking unknown callers but check Settings/General/phone each morning because some settings would change back at random. Very frustrating but new phone basically works and I mailed old phone back to Apple today! I got the same reply as last one.
