Error connecting to shared printer - unable to verify the printer on your network

This question has been asked before, but with no reply, so...

I'm on a MacBook Pro 12,1 running macOS 10.13.6. I have a Brother printer connected to an iMac (via USB), running 10.12.6. The printer works fine on the iMac. It's shared on the iMac to "Everyone".

When I try to setup the printer on my MBP, it shows up in the "Add" dialog as:

Brother HL-L2300D series @ My iMac Bonjour Shared

When I select it, the "Name" and "Location" fields are populated correctly, and the "Use" field contains:

Brother HL-L2300D series CUPS

So far so good... but when I click "Add" I get an "Unable to verify the printer on the network" error:

I can't find any information in any log about what kind of error occurred. I've tried a bunch of things I've tried that were recommended in other postings:

  • Removed and re-added the printer on the iMac
  • Rebooted the iMac and the MacBook Pro
  • Tried connecting via IP (using both LPD and IPP), which don't seem to find the printer at all (the "Location:" field is empty, and the "Use:" field contains "Generic Postscript Printer"). If I try clicking "Add" anyway, I get a similar "Unable to verify printer on the network" dialog.
  • Reset the printing system on both systems.

None of these fixed the problem.

Can anyone help?

Just did, it doesn't find the printer, even by IP address. It finds the Brother printer on my other iMac (though it's not supported by the app)

Also, I can print a test page via the printer utility on my MBP when I create the printer in the CUPS admin page. But other attempts to print generally fail. If I print a random file, it hangs on the MBP and the message in the queue on the iMac is "Open raster file failed."
