iMessages migrating from storage to iCloud

My daughter has more than 17gb of iMessage texts saved on her iPhone memory. She has 50gb of iCloud storage, but didn’t have her iMessage toggled to save to the cloud, so they’re all stored on the phone, which now has less than 2gb of storage available.

We’ve now switched the messages “on” to save to the cloud, and it does appear the cloud is very slowly filling up. However the phone storage amount has remained the same. The messages will eventually migrate themselves off of phone storage, right?

Thanks

The messages, no. Their attachments, yes. Be aware this may not save you a lot of storage on the device itself.

Thanks for the response. It's been 24 hrs since I toggled cloud on for messages (and phone charged all night) and I think the migration to the cloud is complete, as her cloud capacity has filled up considerably with messages.

Unfortunately I'm not seeing ANY effect on phone storage. Still the same as before. A good portion of these messages did contain photo attachments (hundreds of them), so even if those were the only things moved to the cloud, that would still be a win, and I'd be satisfied to be seeing those moved off of phone storage. But I'm not.

More time needed? Hope that's the case. Or there's no point to even doing this..
