Trackpad and keyboard non-response yet touchbar is working

Hi - Earlier today I went to turn on my 2016 MBP 13" w/touchbar after having updated to OS 10.15.4. At the login screen I was prompted that with a message box saying that no keyboard or trackpad were detected. I looked at the keyboard and mouse and found both to be unresponsive. When turning it on I realized that neither the trackpad nor the keyboard were responsive. I managed to reset the NVRAM via terminal using an external keyboard and mouse. However this did not help. I refreshed the OS and tried resetting the SMC but also had no success. What else would be possible?

Thanks!
