Using audio interface with camera

I’m trying to record video with an external mic plugged in through the lightning cable port with an audio interface. I’m using an iconnectivity 4+. I have it plugged directly into my phone. When start talking, it registers on the interface but when I go to listen to my video, the volume icon is grayed out. Any ideas on how to get this to work? Is this a big in the IOS? As a follow up, I got the apple brand camera adapter (I'd been using a clone from Heuker) and have manged to get some semblance of normalcy with that. I still have to exit the camera app, unplug the adapter, restart the camera app, set to video, then reconnect the adapter. At that point I can consistently get exactly one recording with sound. Afterwards I have to go through the whole process again to avoid the grayed out audio symbol.

Hope that helps!

Hi barthight,

Thanks for the post. Being able to record using an audio interface is always great, and I'm happy to see if I can offer any helpful information.

For clarification, are you trying to record using the built-in Camera app, or a different app? If you haven't tried yet, it may be useful to test more than one app.

If you haven't tried the Camera app yet, I recommend trying that without the audio interface. Knowing if you're able to record audio otherwise would be helpful in narrowing this issue down.

Feel free to reply back with the results of testing the above.

I hope that helps to get you started. Take care.

I'm having the exact same problem and it's making me wanna put all my stuff in a pile, set it ablaze, and jump on top. I'm working with a focusrite 4i4, with an xlr mic and ts 1/4" from a yamaha keyboard in the respective #1 and #2 analogue ports on front. I run the interface through a powered usb hub, and the hub connects to the pad through a camera connector cable. I thought I'd gotten a bead on it, as it seemed to happen most often when i had both ports active, AKA it would record just the piano or the mic happily enough, just not both together for some reason. But then I've since had problems with just the mic plugged in as well. Sometimes it shows gray and muted, other times just gray, either way it's *extremely* frustrating.

As with the OP, i've looked at (for instance) switcher studio, which can manage it all just fine, but i'd like to avoid paying an extra $30 - $50 a month because of a grayed out audio signal in an otherwise (normally) very functional app.
