People can’t hear me when using AirPods

I have (brand new) AirPods and every time I'm on the phone ppl will say my voice is going in & out or static. I then have to take out my airpods and switch to my iPhone to talk. What is going on and how can I fix this??

All recipients. It seems to happen more if I happen to touch one of the AirPods to better position it in my ear. But it has also happened when I didn’t do that
