15" 2016 MacBook Pro Backlight Service Program?

My 15" 2016 MacBook Pro is having display problems identical to the ones described in the Backlight Service Program for 13" 2016 MacBook Pros (https://support.apple.com/13-inch-macbook-pro-display-backlight-service). Despite the fact that people have reported similar issues across both models elsewhere online (a quick google search for "MacBook Pro Flexgate" shows this), only 13" models are included in the relief program for whatever reason. I am not particularly eager about potentially paying hundreds of dollars for a display repair due to an inherent flaw in the machine that has been openly acknowledged in some models from the same year. I was wondering if there was a reason for this decision to exclude 15" models from the program and if there is anyway to expand coverage for these models?

I took my 2106 MBP 15" for repair and was quoted £550 for the repair. I did point out that it was the same issue as the 13" and discuss that under the Consumer Rights Act a laptop should last longer. When I went to pick it up the laptop had been repaired with a new top and screen for free. It's worth researching your rights and politely pointing out what you know.

As I wrote a couple of days before, I had the exact same issue with my laptops screen. I have the 15” MacBook. I took it to my one of my countries authorized service provider and they informed me that they can’t cover it. The asked me to talk with Apple’s support. I filled for exception and they gave me the exception. The Apple support representative had my exception agreed and I got my 15” laptop repaired at no extra cost.

Update - Both MBPs looked at today in the Apple Store - both displayed identical symptoms - when opened at acute angles the backlight and video worked, when the angle increased the backlight failed however the video could still be seen under torchlight. The technicians acknowledged this however advised they operate under the Service Programs and booked the 13'' MBP 2016 in for a free repair under the MacBook Pro Display Backlight Service Program. They would not do so for the 15" MPB 2016 quoting £660 for a repair.

Here's the thing. You should contact Apple Support and send your machine off to them for repair. They will perform a free diagnostic and quote you a repair cost. If you decide to have the repair and pay for it then later on IF Apple extends the repair program to your model of MacBook Pro then they will issue you a refund for the repair you paid for upon request.

Yes. Agree with you. Such a dreadful behaviour from a multibillion dollar company. And I believe my camment was very helpful for the people had the same problem.

I just was saying my experience in the UK regarding the Flexgate issue in my mbp 15inch. Algter 2 months of go and back with unhelpful calls with the costumer service I decided to send a letter before court action. They then agree to repay my computer for free. Apple will try to cover this issue as much as possible until the court case force them to add the 15inch version to the service programme. Until then I believe they will try to just make the costumers who don't agree to pay the £700 happy with the free repair.

best,

Dr Jack L.

he same issue happened to me a few months ago. I spent hours trying to work with Apple, but they refuse to acknowledge it’s a defect.

Lucky for us there is a class action lawsuit being filed against Apple for this exact reason. A previous law suit got thrown out because Apple claimed it isn’t a design flaw (however they fixed the cable in future models so they must know). We should all email the lawyers working on this, with enough support we can hold Apple accountable.

lawyer email is:

Same issue: 2016 MBP 15 - spotlights this week and 6 months out of extended warranty. Had my keyboard replaced just under the wire as it just started to fail. This round is looking at a screen replace at $800. A quick google returned an identical problem covered by apple for the 13" and a design change on the 2018 on the offending cable. Seems to be a design error due to a cable bending too much over a fixed edge over time. Im one of the long timers with this being my 5th pro laptop with them and hope they give a break on the replacement.

I actually was able to get my 2017 15" repaired with no cost to me (out of warranty) in August 2019. My apple store said they would likely extend the service program to the 15" models, which all know hasn't happened. Well guess what happened 2 days ago? a yellow stripe down the middle of my screen. I'm not hopeful I'll get lucky enough to get them to fix it for me again at no cost, but all you having issues, if you haven't taken it in b/c you assume it won't be covered, give it a shot, you never know!

I took my 15" 2016 MBP with screen that died last week (external display is still good) to an AS Genius bar here in Tokyo last week and they confirmed what I already knew (no extended warranty repair on this model). I'm now using it as a desktop and searching recycle sites for one with a dead motherboard and good screen to do a DIY swap. I am an electronics engineer so it's within my skill set. When I get the dead screen off, I'll send it to Apple!
