15" 2016 MacBook Pro Backlight Service Program?

My 15" 2016 MacBook Pro is having display problems identical to the ones described in the Backlight Service Program for 13" 2016 MacBook Pros (https://support.apple.com/13-inch-macbook-pro-display-backlight-service). Despite the fact that people have reported similar issues across both models elsewhere online (a quick google search for "MacBook Pro Flexgate" shows this), only 13" models are included in the relief program for whatever reason. I am not particularly eager about potentially paying hundreds of dollars for a display repair due to an inherent flaw in the machine that has been openly acknowledged in some models from the same year. I was wondering if there was a reason for this decision to exclude 15" models from the program and if there is anyway to expand coverage for these models?

Exact same problem with my 15" 2016 MacBook Pro. Problem was intermittent earlier and did not care to take it for service. Apple care expired on Dec2019. Apple refused to fix it. Hope to see they extend the 13" program to 15" as well.

Unfortunately, me too. All of my apple products I have been using so far (about 25 years) still work or I was able to resell. Whats wrong with this weird replacement program only for 13inch?! So a laptop worth 3200€ is trash after 4 years because of a cable you can't exchange?! I´m afraid I will have to turn my back on apple. Windows machines cost half the price and last double the time. Really really a big shame apple has become a lifestyle product with low quality. What a shame

I have just had exactly the same issue with my MacBook Pro 15.6 2017 leaving me without a computer on holiday and been quoted 800 pounds to fix.

Disgusted at the treatment I am receiving. Apple hardware seems to be far to fragile and poor quality to use frankly.

Will probably move off ASAP now, Big Sur broke important applications too.

I got quoted about 700 or 800 bucks.

I asked the Genius Bar guy two questions.

Q1: You acknowledge that it was the same issue as the 13" right?

A1: He said yes but unfortunately he could only repair 13" for free.

Q2: If I would pay you 800 bucks today for the repair, could you give me a warranty on the repair?? What if it would go off in three month, AGAIN, because of the same issue? If yo could not address the design flaw (like you had on the keyboard), what would be the point of me repairing it now and then paying you another 800 in very short future for a second repair.

A2: I understand your frustration but that is the best I could do. Would you want to pay using Apple Pay or credit card for today's repair?

I have this exact problem. I took it into an apple store because now my laptop screen fails when it opens to 90 degrees. They said the repair is ~$600. this is a major problem since it was a design flaw that was detected on the 13" and they only stopped the 15" because the class action was dismissed.

I am now in the process of replacing all of my apple products with Android base and Microsoft base. Difficult change since I love apple, but I feel if a company doesn't take care of its client there is no need to stick with them.

I believe company want to avoid this additional cost on 15” screen issue coz they already spend on keyboard and battery for 15” Macbook. It was a disaster product and it is shameful act by Apple for letting consumer suffer. Such a high end product with extremely poor service. They will get our curse and will suffer one day. They are again ruining the vision of Great Mr S. Jobs

You ask, "Why did apple choose only to repair and fix the 13" MacBook Pro Model and not the 15"?" Well it's obvious. They knew it was the same problem but also knew that they don't sell nearly as many 15" models. SEE BELOW. Their top sales are all in 13" MacBook Pro's. It's not that they didn't acknowledge the issue with the 15", it's that they didn't care to fix it because they thought just taking care of the Majority of 13" where the most complaints were coming from would make the issue go away. In essence they were right and played us all. All of us with the 15" and this problem could have been as loud as we wanted about the issue, there just wasn't enough of us for them to care. The list below will show you the best selling MacBooks and unfortunately the 15" isn't even Top 4.

I took my 15" 2016 MBP with screen that died last week (external display is still good) to an AS Genius bar here in Tokyo last week and they confirmed what I already knew (no extended warranty repair on this model). I'm now using it as a desktop and searching recycle sites for one with a dead motherboard and good screen to do a DIY swap. I am an electronics engineer so it's within my skill set. When I get the dead screen off, I'll send it to Apple!

Took My 2016 MacBook Pro to the Apple store to have a technician look at it. He verified that my laptop was having the same problem as the 13 inch MacBook Pro's having the same issue. However, he told me that the repair would cost somewhere around 700-800 dollars because Apple has not included the 15 inch MacBooks in the replacement program. I called apple customer service and spoke with someone higher up and she was more interested in finding the figuring out which technician helped me to reprimand him for having me to call her than she was in addressing my problem. She also declined to assist me in any way with this screen repair except for making me shell out all the money for getting it fixed. All we can do is sit back and wait for Apple to be forced into covering the repairs by the legal system since they are obviously not going to voluntarily cover the screen replacement..

Yeah I have a perfectly good $2500 Mac Pro now just sitting collecting dust because of this flex gate problem, And my thoughts are… Why pay Apple $800 to fix the screen when a brand new one cost just a little bit more. Seems like such a scam. I would love more than anything if another company came out with things close to Apple. I believe I would switch immediately.

I just had the exact same issue with my 15”. I don’t know why they would cover the 13” model and not the 15” model. They have already admitted that there is an issue with that year’s MacBook. I don’t know whether I should repair my laptop and hope that management will change their mind and reimburse me, or start over with an entirely new computer. Customer service was horrible and entirely unhelpful. I don’t know if I can buy another Apple product given this experience.
