15" 2016 MacBook Pro Backlight Service Program?

My 15" 2016 MacBook Pro is having display problems identical to the ones described in the Backlight Service Program for 13" 2016 MacBook Pros (https://support.apple.com/13-inch-macbook-pro-display-backlight-service). Despite the fact that people have reported similar issues across both models elsewhere online (a quick google search for "MacBook Pro Flexgate" shows this), only 13" models are included in the relief program for whatever reason. I am not particularly eager about potentially paying hundreds of dollars for a display repair due to an inherent flaw in the machine that has been openly acknowledged in some models from the same year. I was wondering if there was a reason for this decision to exclude 15" models from the program and if there is anyway to expand coverage for these models?

Exact same problem with my 15" 2016 MacBook Pro. Problem was intermittent earlier and did not care to take it for service. Apple care expired on Dec2019. Apple refused to fix it. Hope to see they extend the 13" program to 15" as well.

I am waiting for Apple to extend the Flexgate repair program to the 15.6 models ...2017 MacBook pro.

In the meantime I purchased a 15.6" USB portable display ($125. on Amazon) and velcro it over my retina display so I can continue to use the macbook pro I paid $2700.00 for. ..... Another option is if Apple is will to sell me an extended warranty service contract the I will use it to repair my MacBook ..... I think that's a fair settlement

I actually was able to get my 2017 15" repaired with no cost to me (out of warranty) in August 2019. My apple store said they would likely extend the service program to the 15" models, which all know hasn't happened. Well guess what happened 2 days ago? a yellow stripe down the middle of my screen. I'm not hopeful I'll get lucky enough to get them to fix it for me again at no cost, but all you having issues, if you haven't taken it in b/c you assume it won't be covered, give it a shot, you never know!

IMHO Apple is no longer a hardware focused company. They are a content provider. Additionally, year after year, the most loyal consumers of any brand are Apple users. We just keep buying up their products regardless of quality or functionality. As such, the company has absolutely no incentive to be concerned about a little design flaw that has caused thousands of users so much frustration. They figure that it's been 5 years since the machines first went into service and eventually all of the users with this issue will have moved on and Apple will escape without doing anything. It's truly a shame. I used to sell Apple computers many years ago and this NEVER would have flown with the management back then. There was a pride in their products that just doesn't exist anymore. But that doesn't seem to bother anybody but those of us who purchased a 2017 MacBook Pro 15".

I have 15 inch MacBook Pro 2016 model. When I open the lid of the laptop more than 45 degrees then the whole screen becomes black. This is the same backlight issue which is found in 13 inch 2016 models for which Apple has introduced free repair program. This is a serious design flaw by Apple which is present in 15 inch models also and thousands of people are facing it all over the world. Please repair my model for free by including 15 inch models also in this free repair program, as this is a serious design flaw by Apple faced by both 13 inch and 15 inch MacBook Pro 2016 models.

Very dissatisfied with Apple services.

Awaiting a quick response.

I took my 2106 MBP 15" for repair and was quoted £550 for the repair. I did point out that it was the same issue as the 13" and discuss that under the Consumer Rights Act a laptop should last longer. When I went to pick it up the laptop had been repaired with a new top and screen for free. It's worth researching your rights and politely pointing out what you know.

Yes. Agree with you. Such a dreadful behaviour from a multibillion dollar company. And I believe my camment was very helpful for the people had the same problem.

I just was saying my experience in the UK regarding the Flexgate issue in my mbp 15inch. Algter 2 months of go and back with unhelpful calls with the costumer service I decided to send a letter before court action. They then agree to repay my computer for free. Apple will try to cover this issue as much as possible until the court case force them to add the 15inch version to the service programme. Until then I believe they will try to just make the costumers who don't agree to pay the £700 happy with the free repair.

best,

Update - Both MBPs looked at today in the Apple Store - both displayed identical symptoms - when opened at acute angles the backlight and video worked, when the angle increased the backlight failed however the video could still be seen under torchlight. The technicians acknowledged this however advised they operate under the Service Programs and booked the 13'' MBP 2016 in for a free repair under the MacBook Pro Display Backlight Service Program. They would not do so for the 15" MPB 2016 quoting £660 for a repair.

I got the same issue today on my 15'' 2016 MacBook Pro. I worked on it this morning, then I started the screensaver and went to have breakfast. Came back and my backlight was off and never went on again. I can only see the screen partially with a strong flashlight, so now I can at least back up my files (with one hand on flashlight and the other on trackpad).

I just want to say how disappointed I am by Apple ignoring this issue. I've been a happy Apple user for 25 years and this is the worst Apple product I've had. I'll rather buy the 2015 non-touch bar model than spend money on fixing this one.
