15" 2016 MacBook Pro Backlight Service Program?

My 15" 2016 MacBook Pro is having display problems identical to the ones described in the Backlight Service Program for 13" 2016 MacBook Pros (https://support.apple.com/13-inch-macbook-pro-display-backlight-service). Despite the fact that people have reported similar issues across both models elsewhere online (a quick google search for "MacBook Pro Flexgate" shows this), only 13" models are included in the relief program for whatever reason. I am not particularly eager about potentially paying hundreds of dollars for a display repair due to an inherent flaw in the machine that has been openly acknowledged in some models from the same year. I was wondering if there was a reason for this decision to exclude 15" models from the program and if there is anyway to expand coverage for these models?

Exact same problem with my 15" 2016 MacBook Pro. Problem was intermittent earlier and did not care to take it for service. Apple care expired on Dec2019. Apple refused to fix it. Hope to see they extend the 13" program to 15" as well.

Yes. I heard this impression from other Apple staff too. The company used to inspire users, now they're switching the purpose of the Apple Ecosystem around to latch users into monthly subscriptions for services.

The commercial model of a one-off fee to buy something you own and use for year (without further charge) is out !

Our only option for this fault in the UK is to make a small claim through the courts to Apple Distribution in Uxbridge.

That is not "the thing" at all. Let me reword your advice...

You're suggesting that submissive users should just pay for Apple's design failure up front, and then pray for a refund.

Which company wouldn't die to have hordes of well-behaved, submissive customers like that ? **** no! We have to fight to have them take responsibility.

We've reverted to using a MacBookPro 2010 until this is resolved. We stacked the old laptop with max memory, switched the hard drive for an SSD and shoved macOS Catalina onto it (thanks to dosdude1 for the macOS port).

Even my MacBook Pro 2016 has the same problem. And irony is, they are not acknowledging that it is a defect from their side and not the users fault. I blindly purchased this costly thing believing that apple is all about quality and trust. They are now quoting 800$ for display replace. It is ridiculous. Apple should roll out the 15 inch program ASAP.

Apple doesn't really want to be a hardware company anymore. Or at least it doesn't seem that way given their complete lack of support for their devices. They want to become Netflix and make their money more passively by TV shows and Music and all the content that every other big company is putting out there. They spent a ton to start up Apple TV productions and are dedicated billions to new programming in order to build a library that they can amortize over the next however many years. So, us little single users of their equipment are left out in the cold. And, what really sucks, is that there is no legitimate competition for their hardware as it is all wired into their ecosystem and ties together. So, we either suck it up or we suffer the slings and arrows of the PC.

I got my 15 inch Macbook Pro (A1707) in 2017. Two months ago, I noticed the usual backlight issue with my screen. I got in touch with Apple Support and they asked me to send it to an authorized service provider. I was not closed to an authorized service provider and I did not have the time to send my laptop to them as I use it for business.

Yesterday, the screen stopped working. I visited the authorized service provider and the price I was quoted was 850€ because of the backlight issue. They informed me that it is not covered snd I should pay for it.

Apple should take special care of that and it seems that it is a very ordinary issue among a lot of Macbook pro 2016 owners.

ps: the image attached shows the issue which was noticed two months ago. The screen does not turn on now.

Same issue. MBP touchbar 15" 2016 6 months out of AppleCare. Genius Bar claimed it had a problem they could determine and wanted almost $700 for a "fixed price blanket repair". My teenage son determined it was a backlight issue using a flashlight. Crazy. If the Genius Bar had told me the real issue at least I would have been able to use it with a remote monitor. Thankful to my son for figuring it out before I recycled it.

As I wrote a couple of days before, I had the exact same issue with my laptops screen. I have the 15” MacBook. I took it to my one of my countries authorized service provider and they informed me that they can’t cover it. The asked me to talk with Apple’s support. I filled for exception and they gave me the exception. The Apple support representative had my exception agreed and I got my 15” laptop repaired at no extra cost.

I bought my Mother's 13'' MPB 2016 about a month before I replaced my old MPB with a 15" MPB 2016. Just before Christmas the usual service request came in re her screen not working - after getting the laptop to work with an external display, a bit of research, I found the 13-inch MacBook Pro Display Backlight Service Program that appears to have been started ion 15 January 2021. Delighted we are now waiting for COVID restrictions to ease so we can get an appointment with apple.

However - Today, I now have the same issue with my 15" MBP - complete backlight failure. If I could look out the receipts the MBPs were almost to the day, the same age as each other when this happened. I will keep an eye out for this programme being extended to the 15" and take both laptops into the Apple Store when it re-opens. Luckily I have an external display - my mother isn't so fortunate.

My 2017 Macbook Pro 15" just started having the flexgate problem. I can't lift the lid beyond around 45 degrees before the screen goes dark. I've checked the problem online and it is obvious that there are many people having the same issue with their 15" Macbook Pros. It's simply inexplicable that Apple is not accepting responsibility for this problem on its 15" models when it has owned up to the exact same issue on the 13" models. Come on Apple, as a long-term and loyal user of your products, I find this insulting and completely unfair.
