Does the Touch ID on the mew MBA turn the computer off or jut put it to sleep?

A friend has the new MBA and was asking me how to turn off his computer. I can't find out what the Touch ID key does other than identify you. Does it actually turn off the computer? Closing the lid puts it to sleep I assume. Does opening the lid turn it on when the lid is lifted? Durning this lockdown I can't actually get to the computer to test out what is happening.
