APPLE TV HDCP ERROR

I have an older Apple TV which works fine with my 7 year old Smart Tv. Trying to watch a movie on Apple TV having signed up for Apple TV+

Menu & trailer work fine.

as soon as I try and start movie HDCP ERROR Screen appears.

Ive reset the Apple TV, removed and replaced HDMI cables, removed the power from Apple TV and replaced and still have the error.

Help!

I’ve […] removed and replaced HDMI cables

If these are good cables that have been working with commercial content before (thus tested positive for HDCP compliancy), then the issue may be the HDMI port on the TV or on the Apple TV.

  • Try a different HDMI port on the TV.
  • Try turning off (not just standby/sleep) and restarting the TV.
  • Try turning off from power (not just standby/sleep) and restarting the Apple TV box.

HDCP is supported by the hardware or it is not. It shouldn’t change from one show to the other. I can’t think of a mechanism that would cause it to be preferential. It should be the same for Apple TV+ as for e.g. Hulu or CBS or Amazon Prime Video.

Many thanks for your reply.

It’s mighty strange!

  • The HDMI cables are all tried & tested and I’m using an Amazon Firestick through a switch which is working fine.
  • I have pulled power from both the tv & Apple TV and then replugged each back into the mains electricity.
  • I’ve left the Apple TV unplugged for an hour before plugging back again.
  • I’ve tried plugging into each of the HDMI ports on the Tv - it only has 3.

The trailer for the film I’ve been trying to watch plays fine; I’ve tried others and they play fine too. As soon as I try to watch the actual movie, I get the HDCP error:

I called Apple support today and they went through a similar list to yours, just not as thoroughly so thank you again.

Hopefully a solution will become apparent.

Best

Thank you for your reply. Strange thing is I see Apple TV, menu, can choose a tv show, watch a trailer for the movie I’m trying to watch but as soon as I push ‘Play’ the movie appears to be starting, black screen with timeline bar at the bottom appears but then the error pops up:

So I’m seeing my Apple TV but not being ‘allowed’ to watch the Beastie Boys film!

i managed to watch a tv show - on normal Apple TV. Very odd!
