I have an iMAC 21.5 inch late 2015 model. I bought it in May 2016. If I download Catalina OS X to replace my EL Capitan OS v 10.11.16. Could there be problems

You won't be able to run any older 32bit software. Other than that you should be fine. Make sure to have a current backup in case anything does go wrong.
