Finder Column View (preview pane) - how to change image size

Yes, it is a bit smaller. It can be zoomed in in place, though, using a two finger gesture in the trackpad. I don’t know if this was also the case in Mojave.

FWIW, I was just looking at Forklift and it appears to have many nice features. It seems that would be your best alternative. Even Path Finder limits the preview size.

I actually posted the Mojave screen shot to show they were the same. On further examination the Catalina previews are smaller although not half the size. I guess the size difference didn't matter enough for me to notice.

I don't know of a Terminal command.

Well, I mentioned the trackpad because that is what I use, but the magic mouse also has the same capability. I believe even a traditional mouse with a scroll wheel will do.

But if this is so crucial to you, then probably going with a third party tool is the right call.

I'm having the same issue after reluctantly upgrading to Catalina this week (including saying goodbye to my Adobe CS6 which works perfectly well, just now with Catalina...) Frustrating that such a simple and use feature would go away -- it that's actually the case, at least.

I started using the column view to sort images when a bug popped up in Preview years ago that locked upon the scroll bar, requiring you to resize the window every time this happened to get the scroll bar back. I sent many bug comments to Apple on this over the years, so at least the got around to it! There's still an odd bug in Preview when you drag a set of files to launch the app -- the first file inexplicably appears at the bottom of the list. This one popped up when the scroll bar broke, but at least it's not as maddening.

MacGuy 1900, you might try using Preview -- it sounds like we've both been using the Finder in column view for the same purpose.

Frustrating to have my workflow disrupted every time there's an OS update! But hey, I've learned to roll with it... bought my first Mac in 1986. :-)

Okay, well I'm not going to type the more detailed response that Apple's forum has deleted when I've posted for a THIRD time, but thanks for your help, Luis. Preview is working in Catalina, so that takes the sting out of losing the functionality of doing large previews in Finder.

Adobe CS6 applications are 64 bit.

Of course Adobe is not going to advertise this, but if you have CS6 installed and upgrade your mac to Catalina the apps still work. My daughter is using them. The installer does not work, though, so they need to be installed using an older OS.

While it is true there is a maximum size for an image in the preview pane, it's fairly large and the behavior is no different than it was in Mojave.

Is there a reason you don't want to use Gallery view:
