Finder Column View (preview pane) - how to change image size

Hi Guys,

Hope you can help me with this.

Yesterday, I've upgraded my iMac (2019 model, 27 inch) to the latest Mac OS system (from Mojave to Catalina). However, I'm having a problem and I hope you can help me solve.

On Mojave, I had a very easy to work in environment; I use the finder column view for all sorts of work and the image from the preview pane was very big. Now on Catalina, the image is fixed to a certain max size (even tho it has much more space to be much bigger). On Mojave the image from the preview pane, simply scaled according to the window space it had. Now, seems like I cannot change the image size at all.

I really do not want to hit the SPACE bar to preview the image each time. Before it was much easier. I hope this can be fixed and I’m not sure why Apple would have change this.

Hope you can provide me with a simple fix or is I missed something.

Thank you!

I'm referring to the column list view (preview pane) where if you hoover of an image, you will see the preview version on the right side. On Mojave, the image was very large as it was able to expand according to the room you have on the screen. On Catalina, from some reason it has a max size (not very big at all). So I simply want to know the reason, if that is somthing that can be fixed (using whatever method)

or if this is something apple made intentionally, which I have no idea why they would even change it or not give you the option to make it larger.

You can file a bug report for the macOS

The above example you sent is from Mojave (its almost twice the size, if not more, than the Catalina pane preview). I'm attaching an example of my screen below so you can see how small the picture is in compassion.

I have no explanation why apple did this in Catalina as its a waste of real estate. I own an iMac so there is plenty of room to see the image in details, which is what I need (or at least give the user an option to make it bigger/smaller). Now, I need to use third party software like Forklift for this, which doesn't limit you in image size in preview pane.

Maybe there is some terminal workaround to remove this size limit?

I'm having the same issue after reluctantly upgrading to Catalina this week (including saying goodbye to my Adobe CS6 which works perfectly well, just now with Catalina...) Frustrating that such a simple and use feature would go away -- it that's actually the case, at least.

I started using the column view to sort images when a bug popped up in Preview years ago that locked upon the scroll bar, requiring you to resize the window every time this happened to get the scroll bar back. I sent many bug comments to Apple on this over the years, so at least the got around to it! There's still an odd bug in Preview when you drag a set of files to launch the app -- the first file inexplicably appears at the bottom of the list. This one popped up when the scroll bar broke, but at least it's not as maddening.

MacGuy 1900, you might try using Preview -- it sounds like we've both been using the Finder in column view for the same purpose.

Frustrating to have my workflow disrupted every time there's an OS update! But hey, I've learned to roll with it... bought my first Mac in 1986. :-)
