Mail app running in the background

After updating my iPhone 7plus to 13.4.1, I experienced a strong reduction in battery performance ( my current battery capacity is 97%) and started looking at the battery draining apps. I found the mail app had been constantly running in the background even when it is not in the background.

So I removed the mail sync with my gmail account , tried deleting the gmail account itself and even removed the mail app from the phone but I still see the Mail app consuming a lot of battery resources ( ~30% in a 24 hr period)

I tried a factory reset also but still mail - whether installed or not / closed from background drains my battery

Is anyone experiencing similar issues or any solutions available? Any help is much appreciated

I know you stated that you deleted the Mail app and then looks like you reinstalled it again.

Let's try something-

  1. Force ReStart Your iPhone as instructed in this article by Apple ➔ How to Force ReStart your iPhone. and if that does not help then go to next steps below. Stop here if step 1 resolves it.
  2. Delete each mail account from the Mail app.
  3. Force ReStart Your iPhone as instructed in this article by Apple ➔ How to Force ReStart your iPhone.
  4. Delete the Mail app
  5. Force ReStart Your iPhone as instructed in this article by Apple ➔ How to Force ReStart your iPhone.
  6. Download the Mail app again
  7. Reinstall each of your email accounts again.

See if that resolves the issue.

You concluded that it was the mail app consuming 30% of your battery energy in a 24 hour period. You then removed the mail app and also disconnected your GMAIL account. Your iPhone still shows the mail app consuming 30% in a 24 hour period.

Question - Did you do all of the above in a matter of hours or a matter of days? I ask because during the 24 hour history period, it will continue to show what the mail app HAD consumed whether you have it installed or not. If the answer is that you did all of the above in a matter of hours then you should wait for another 24 hours at least and you should see that the mail app will end up having no impact.

I tried all the different options over a week. In addition, yesterday night I disconnected the phone from both the WiFi and mobile network but still on a hourly basis like 12 AM - 1 AM and so on I see the mail app running in the background for 20 to 30 mins

Particularly from 3AM to 4 AM it was running for 59 minutes in the background

i cannot understand this when the mobile and WiFi networks are Off and the Mail app is also closed then how it would do something in the background
