The computer was restarted because of a problem.

Getting this error message whenever using my MacBook Pro 16" after sleep for more than 1hr. Now getting quite irritating. Called Apple Support and ran Disk diagnostics, Rebooted in diagnostic mode for hardware test, did the Reset of SMC controller due a one sec burst of fan activity when restarting. All diagnostics reporting no issues.

I think more users need to complain to Apple Support to get this issue escalated. The rep I talked to gave me the impression that this is a problem that only I am having.

This same issue has been plaguing me for weeks with a brand new MacBook Pro 16". Came across the following:

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/sudden-graphics-corruption-16-macbook-pro.2230856/

"Okay so I'm only seeing it in Chrome, at least today. I turned off Chrome's hardware acceleration and it seems to have disappeared... Not really sure whats going on."

I did made the same change in chrome settings just now and it fixed it instantly. Where as before the machine would crash coming back from sleep, now goes into sleep instantly and wakes just as it should.

Again, I just tried this a moment ago, but it seems to do the trick. I'll update if the problem comes back.

Finally fixed. I dropped off my MacBook Pro16" on Fri, Aug 14 and picked it up from Apple Store today. They told me it would take 3days to repair but it actually took 5 days. They replaced the logic board and the TouchID. I had to restore my laptop from a backup. I wish I took the laptop in much sooner than having to deal with this restart problem for over 5 months.

Took my MacBook Pro to the Genius Bar at Apple Store today. Technician suspects it's a logic board failure and has ordered me a new Logic Board, CPU, Memory, and SDD. Also will replace my Touch ID Board. He offered me AppleCare with 3yrs warranty starting from today. I took it for $419.00. The replacement parts would have cost $1,134.00 if I was out of warranty. Will update this thread once the parts come in and the repair is completed. The Apple Tech didn't even bother looking at the error message dialogue box...told me the problem is evident enough that there is a logic board issue. My message to all...make sure to get this repaired before your warranty runs out as it could be a very expensive repair bill.

I don't use chrome, but I see it in WhatsApp desktop (I guess its Electron and therefore chromium based) from time to time.

No way to turn off hardware acceleration in WhatsApp desktop, but I'll just keep it closed for a few days to see if that's it.

The problem is, many apps are Electron based (Visual Studio Code, Atom editor, and who knows).

I'll stop using WhatsApp desktop for a bit and report my findings.

Hi Sparktoronto

I had the same problem with my MacBookPro i9 16". I just found a link today from a certain Can Artuk on the web that worked for me. The solution is to uncheck the PowerNap button and more important to uncheck the automatic graphics switching. I use for my profession a lot a Cintiq to work on, but the problem also seems to be, that using external monitors makes the Mac go in tilt.

here is the link to follow the steps:

https://medium.com/@canartuc/kernel-panics-in-new-macbook-pro-16-solution-is-here-2ac1d88fada7

Until now my brand new MacBook Pro (that did cost a fortune) finally works again...shame on Apple that nobody there resolves the problem...

Good luck, I hope it helps

Work around useful for some Users:

system preferences > energy saver ...

... disable power nap for BOTH power adapter and Battery operation.

General recommendation:

When your Mac is near AC power, plug it in. "Normal" should be above 80 percent full battery. Otherwise, you risk 'storing' your computer (e.g. overnight) in a low-battery situation, which is a prime contributor to battery swelling and failure, and also to "Your computer restarted because of a problem" (it ran out of power).

Did you manage to make any progress with Apple? I have the same issues and it seems that many others do too so I am surprised this is not a more well publicised issue.

Some have posted suggesting changing energy saver settings, disabling graphics switching, etc etc. Other post suggesting 3rd party extensions at fault. I have tried all of these suggestions including full formatted clean reinstall with SMC and PRAM reset and still get the same issue. Only thing I can not do is install an earlier MacOS (some say that 10.15.4 does not have the issue, but again, some say it does).

I have been in touch with Apple support and they confirmed there is a known issue with a software fix in the pipeline, but no date committed.

However I also get panic issues with Windows under bootcamp, so I am dubious it really is in fact a software issue, and it does not seem to impact every MacBook Pro 16 owner.

Thanks for that clarification.

My comment was just general background information, not any sort deep analysis of your specific situation.

Different users do different things, and some insist "just re-Install" requires their invasive Anti-Virus software, and then wonder why they continue to have issues.

You may be better served by starting a new thread, posting your exact model Mac and exact version of MacOS, and posting your most recent kernel panic report. They are stored at:

/Library/logs/DiagnosticReports

named with Date&Time and end in .panic

Also having the same issue with an i9 16" MacBook Pro, been following other threads as well. I've disabled PowerNap for a few weeks and it's diminished the frequency of restarts slightly, but still happens whether or not I'm using my external monitor. Just turned off graphics switching as well, hope that will be a workaround. I got the computer in April on 10.15.3 and had the issue, currently on the latest upgrade and still no improvement.

Sometimes it's a "GPU panic" more frequently now it's a CPU panic.

Panic reports are saved in this directory:

/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports

to get there, copy the string above and paste into:

Finder > Go menu > Go to Folder

you want reports named with date&Time and ending in .panic

please post the most recent one of those in its entirety, using the Additional text Icon in the forum reply footer:

Please do not post more than 20 lines from any other kinds of reports found there. They are interminable, and information applicable for this purpose (if any) appears on the first page.
