The computer was restarted because of a problem.

panic(cpu 2 caller 0xffffff7f929f797b): GPU Panic: mux-regs 4 3 3f 1f 0 0 severity 3 WS-ready 0 switch-state 0 IG FBs 1 EG FBs 0:0 power-state 4 3D idle HDA idle system-state 2 power-level 5:0 power-retry 0:0 connect-change 0 : PowerPlay Failed Resume.

Getting this error message whenever using my MacBook Pro 16" after sleep for more than 1hr. Now getting quite irritating. Called Apple Support and ran Disk diagnostics, Rebooted in diagnostic mode for hardware test, did the Reset of SMC controller due a one sec burst of fan activity when restarting. All diagnostics reporting no issues.

I think more users need to complain to Apple Support to get this issue escalated. The rep I talked to gave me the impression that this is a problem that only I am having.

This same issue has been plaguing me for weeks with a brand new MacBook Pro 16". Came across the following:

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/sudden-graphics-corruption-16-macbook-pro.2230856/

"Okay so I'm only seeing it in Chrome, at least today. I turned off Chrome's hardware acceleration and it seems to have disappeared... Not really sure whats going on."

I did made the same change in chrome settings just now and it fixed it instantly. Where as before the machine would crash coming back from sleep, now goes into sleep instantly and wakes just as it should.

Again, I just tried this a moment ago, but it seems to do the trick. I'll update if the problem comes back.

Hi everybody

I've got the same 'Panic' problem like you too. My brand new MacBookPro 16" 8-core intel core i9 I bought in April 2020 makes a hissing vent sound after waking up opening the lid trying to restart and shuts down. Because installing the latest upadates of Catalina 10.15.4 and 10.15.5 did not help, I did a clean install of Catalina and erased first my HD. But no succes, same issue occurs. Chrome for me is not the problem...because I uninstalled it and also erased manually all traces of the app, but never the less it still happens... l Guess we have to wait for the Apple-programmers to find a cure for their own "Maccorona".

Here is a part of my thread I keep sending to Apple every time I open my Mac to start working:

Made an appt. thru Apple Support at Authorized Service Provider shop called Glitch Fix.

Technician there didn't even look at the diagnostic error report.

Simply said I would have to leave for a few days for them to run diagnostics.

Told him I need to use my computer and cannot afford to be without my computer for that long.

They cannot offer any loaner and he mentioned a lot of other MacPro 16" owners brought computers but did not provide any clear answer on how he resolved or fixed any of their problem.

Decided to wait for the next MacOS release before leaving my expensive laptop so they can dismantle it, etc.

Maybe just turning off the SLEEP option is the only temporary go around until Apple get their act together.

Very similar sentiments to my own. The reason I think it may be hardware related is that it happens in Windows boot camp also, and does not happen in safe mode, plus that there are users who have working machines either from new or after logic board replacement or machine replacement, although I guess it could be a lower firmware at issue. It also happens straight after a clean install.

Whether hardware or software this does need to be resolved.

I have also used apple products since the mid 90’s and am appalled by the absence of customer care. I was more zen about it until Apple support refused to replace the machine and referred me to terms and conditions I accepted when I first used the machine and claimed I had accepted it “as is”... frankly that’s terrible customer care having spent this much to be rendered with a device that is unusable for any meaningful task.

Pleased to hear that 10.15.6 is fixing the problem for some. Unfortunately it has not fixed my issues ("powerplay failed resume" at shutdown or sleep wake, "powerplay failed to initialize" at startup, "userspace watchdog timeout"'s* at random during normal use*).

*I only get the random watchdog timeouts when the computer has successfully managed to boot into normal mode, but it can no longer get past the "powerplay failed to initialize" panic and boot into normal mode.

Thank you very much for the help and you message.

Actually I already disabled all power apps in the system-prefereces and updated to the latest MacOS (clean install)...but unfortunately without any luck. It still does the 100% vent for a second and shuts off to shortly after restart again. Also when not closing the lid but just leaving the MacBookPro for a longer period idle....this was another message I just received:

panic(cpu 12 caller 0xffffff7fa22f7983): GPU Panic: mux-regs 5 3 7f 1f 0 0 severity 3 WS-ready 0 switch-state 0 IG FBs 0 EG FBs 3:0 power-state 0 3D idle HDA idle system-state 2 power-level 15:0 power-retry 0:0 connect-change 0 : PowerPlay Failed Resume.

Hi everybody

I thought I had resolved the problem but, NO, it still occurs like all other MacBookPro 16 inch users I know. I tried PRAMzapping, SMC resets, uncheck the power settings and even a clean install of Catalina 10.15.5 having reformatted my HD. No results. I think it is a software issue of the new OS. Although some believe it's a hardware issue. If so, it's time that Apple takes responsibility. It's a very expensive machine and if you need it professionally for edits and graphics like I do, it's super annoying that your Mac restarts after sleep or closing the lid and wakes with this vent-coughs as it caught COVID too:-(

I work with Apple for over 25 years now, never had an issue like this before....that's why I still trust them to resolve this. But time is running. HELP APPLE GUYS, DO SOMETHING!

Jul 12, 2020 8:59 AM in response to Grant Bennet-Alder

Not sure if you read my posts?

It happens in regular mode immediately after a clean formatted reinstall, without having added anything or done anything other than complete the OS install process. And in that same condition, it does not happen in safe mode.

Would you agree that, having not added anything, rules out the chance of it being due to having added something?
