popping sound from 12 inch macbook - what is it?

recently (like within the last couple of weeks) i hear a popping sound coming from my computer around where the speakers are from time to time, even with headphones plugged in. i've done a bit of googling and it seems to be common in the macbook pro, but not my model.

i'm wondering what it is... is it the hinge? is it the speakers? is it the battery - and is my battery eventually going to swell? is it none of these things? how concerned should i be?

MacBook, macOS 10.15

Hello and welcome to Apple Support Communities emily_a,

I see that you're hearing a popping sound from your MacBook. I can certainly understand your concern, and I'd be happy to look into this with you.

Let's work together to try to isolate the issue. Take a look at the article blow that has some steps that you can work through to help with this issue that you've been experiencing.

Get help if the internal speakers on your Mac don't make sound

If the issue remains after trying these steps, respond back with some more details. Do you hear the sound when using a specific app or apps? Has there been any physical or liquid damage to your Mac, that you're aware of?
