USB-C Ethernet adapter issue

I have an Anker USB-C ethernet adapter connected to a 2017 MacBook Pro and I'm having an issue where 9 times out of ten the ethernet connection will have a self assigned IP and will not connect to the internet. the WIFi is rock solid and never has any issues. The weird thing is that it will work 10% of the time and I've never been able to figure out why. I did notice that if I don't remove the adapter and just plug in (and out) the ethernet cable it has a better chance of working and connecting to the internet. . But if I remove the adapter and plug it back in then it usually always gives me a self assigned IP.

Is there any way to fix this? I'm running OS Catalina and my router is the latest Comcast Xfinity Gigabit router.

thanks!

Hello Erik Tomasson,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities!

I understand that the ethernet adapter you are using with your MacBook pro will have a self assigned IP and will not connect to the internet. I am happy to help!

Let's try an SMC reset.

You may also want to try an NVRAM reset.

If you're still experiencing the issue after performing the above tasks, then let's try Safe Mode.

Let me know if that worked for you.

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

Take care!

Hi Brenden,

Thanks for your help. I tried your suggestions but its still saying that it has a self assigned IP when I plug it in. The realized the only way I can get it to be active and have an IP address to connect to internet is if I unplug the ethernet from the adapter, renew the DHCP lease, plug the ethernet cable back in and do that about four to five times in a row and then voila it no no longer has a self assigned IP address and it has a green marker next to it.

I've tried multiple cables and two other adapters including the Apple/Belkin adapter and they all do the same thing.
