My 2020 magic keyboard does not work with my iPad Pro 2020

My 2020 iPad Pro is up to date. Update 13.4.1 and my magic keyboard is still not working without being connected to the wall outlet. I have called apple 3 times and the issue has not been resolved. I have been having it for about a week now without it working. I actually returned the first magic keyboard 2020 i purchased because i thought it was defective. I have restored my iPad to factory settings, i have turned it off and on, i even went through resetting all my settings. After doing all these steps the keyboard starts working perfectly, after closing it and leaving it there for a bit is when the problem begins. I try to open it back up and the keyboard is not working again, not even the iPad is working at this point. If i take the iPad off i will not be able to turn it on and it wont respond to anything until i put the iPad back on the keyboard and connect it to the power outlet. After doing this the iPad turns on as if nothing happened and the keyboard is working as well up until the point that i disconnect the keyboard from the charger. Then the keyboard will not work but the iPad will. I guess i am just sitting here waiting for a new update to be released hoping it will fix it. If not i will have to wait till the apple stores open back up. For a 350 dollar keyboard this is unacceptable.

Your Magic Keyboard can be powered by either the iPad, or when connected, by the Power Adapter (charger) via the pass-through USB-C connector on the spine of the iPad.

In view of the symptoms that you describe, your problem is most likely to be an issue associated with your iPad Pro - and not the Magic Keyboard. Given that you report having already tried a reset of all settings on your iPad, as a further step in attemting to resolve the issue, I recommend a full “restore”.

The restoration process will erase, reset and install a fresh copy of the most recent version of iPadOS - and if you taken the precaution of having taken either an iCloud or iTunes backup of your iPad, all locally stored data can be restored to the iPad at the end of this process.

So, check that you have a current backup of your iPad and that your iPad is fully charged and disconnected from any accessories, then follow this procedure:

In the unlikely event that this process is unsuccessful, you would be best advised to directly contact Apple Support for assistance. Having already completed the described process, you’ll hopefully avoid significant repetition of diagnostics. The link to Contact Support is at top-right of this page.

I hope this information proves to be helpful in resolving the problem with your iPad Pro and new Magic Keyboard.

Dear Sirs,

I was frustrated when I couldn't figure out why my band new Magic keyboard 4th gen wouldn't turn on? I knew the iPad Pro powered it, so where was the switch? I began my search and found other users asking the same thing, Well I rechecked the fit and found my answer! Please everyone who has a non working Magic keyboard, please attach and re-attach the iPad Pro to the Magic keyboard many times before giving up on it. I discovered that just because the magnetic attachment is made it doesn't mean the pin connectors are in contact. Once your pins have connected correctly the Keyboard will work like a dream! Thank you Apple, a delight to use.

I to had an issue, where the MK stopped responding, although it has been working well for nearly a month. After restarting the ipad, and all those other suggestions I found one on Mac forums I think, talking about the charging of the ipad. It suggested, removing the ipad form the MK, plugging the charge lead into the ipad (not the charge through port) and replacing the ipad...maybe a couple of times. Hey Presto, all fired up , and working like there was nothing amiss.

I did notice before it stopped working, the first point a problem was showing was the track pad was not operating, then the keyboard stopped working. Maybe it was a poorly aligned ipad with the connectors.! Also I noted, this problem occurred whilst I had it charging via the Pass through port, and ipad closed. When i first opened the ipad, it was the track pad, that alerted me, as it was not functioning. So hope this helps future users.

Same for me. If you plug the charger lead onto the iPad and not the keyboard, and attach the iPad to the keyboard on and off several times, it should start working. I initially tried resetting the iPad and all the other suggestions, but found this solution on another site, and it worked for me.

also make sure the iPad is really aligned well, i found if it’s slightly out of line, it will cause all sorts of problems.

good luck.
