why would my MacBook be disqualified from purchase of apple care?

I bought it 3 days ago. Went online to buy apple care and I received a message that the product was not eligible
Go to the Menu Bar-About this Mac-Service-Check my Service and Support Coverage Status. From there you login and Apple will provide you the option to purchase Applecare Plus.
that is exactly what I did and the apple support page (which populates the device serial number) says that this product is not eligible. Any ideas why?
