power book g4 17 inch 2005

I have a power book g4 17 inch 2005 when you press the power button the hard drive spins up and clicks a couple of times and nothing happens the display stays blank and no boot chime. it charges the battery when plugged in. any help would really be appreciated.

Try an SMU or PMU reset. It has been ages since I worked on this system, but I believe the SMU/PMU reset button is located beneath the Keyboard when you lift the Keyboard up. Otherwise the reset button is located near the memory slots when you remove the memory cover.


You want to press the SMU/PMU micro switch just one time for less than a second or you could crash the SMU/PMU. Wait 15 seconds, the power on the laptop. I like to use a nylon probe to make sure I can feel the switch being pressed.


If the hard drive is clicking, then that doesn't bode well for the drive. It is possible the drive is preventing the system from powering up.
