iPad Pro 10.5" continually reboots after 13.4.1 update.

Hello all.

Have a 10.5" iPad Pro that reboots every 30-45 seconds when logged in. Even if no apps are running. This started after I updated to 13.4.1. Is it still possible to downgrade? Basically has rendered the iPad useless. Any other suggestions?

I’d try a restore to factory settings. This will wipe the iPad, reset all settings - and, crucially, will install a complete new copy of iPadOS:

If you ensure that you have a current iCloud or iTunes backup before you begin, you’ll be able to optionally restore your locally stored data at the end of the restore process.

I have two iPad’s Pro 10.5”, within immediate reach, that are working flawlessly with iPadOS 13.4.1.

Have you ?

I am not having this issue.

So, no reason for me to even try this!

I have been very aware of how bad Apple's the quality control and quality control of beta developers of iOS has been since iOS 11.

iOS has been basically garbage since the 64-bit hardware/software switch back in 2016 with the introduction of iOS 11.

iOS 11 was complete garbage.

iOS 12 was also, on and off, another bug ridden/quality disaster.

Both iOS 11 and 12, started a huge issue with all years of iPad Pro models ( as well as the new 2019, 10.5 inch screen iPad Air 3 models ) intermittent touch screen issues that still remains pervasive to this day for many more iPad Pro owners than this battery drain issue, currently.

iPadOS 13 software quality has been all over the place and iPadOS 13 has REALLY been bug ridden and has NOT been very stable and reliable, at all!

I stopped upgrading my original 2015 iPad Pro and it is still happily running iOS 10.3.3.

A month ago, or so, I purchased another used, but terrific condition 2016 12.9 inch screen iPad Pro that came with iPadOS 13.3.2 and that has been running very well for me and have NOT updated this iPad Pro any farther.

Unless something drastic happens with the last few iPadOS 13 updates to convince me otherwise,

I will not be upgrading these iPad Pro models until iPadOS 14 in a few more months, in the Fall of this year.

Not much.

A small footnote of an article mentioned in some obscure sort of tech news blog I never heard of.

And they way that article was written only indicated several users affected with this issue.

No hundreds or thousands of users affected was mentioned or written.

I wouldn't bank on Apple doing anything when only one minority article mentions a very, VERY small minority ( niche ) of iPad Pro users are affected by this issue.

Such a small article in an obscure tech news blog is NOT going to get Apple to do anything.

I wouldn't hold my breath for a fix from Apple, for this boot loop issue, either.

Hey all. Got a voicemail today from AppleCare regarding this issue. We might be getting somewhere! I'll update after I talk to them. Hopefully some of you are getting the calls too... I went to the feedback site and submitted the problem there. Looks like that's what generated the case number and the call back.

Well, I drained my battery completely and cleaned the connector. IPad still rebooting. So sick of this POS.

To bring the battery to zero, I drained it down to the point where the flashing red battery and lightning cable icons appeared when pressing the power button. Then I carefully applied a clamp to the iPad with a rubber washer pressing on the power button. This started cycling repeated attempts to restart the machine, displaying the battery/ lightning cable icons on each cycle. The iPad went black in about 2 hours with no response whatsoever to external buttons. The battery was as dead as I could possibly get it.

Recharged to 100%. Started with no issue. First crash in around 5 minutes. I will not attempt a 6th factory restore.

So, I’ve done everything to try to skirt this SOFTWARE ISSUE. If Apple continues to tell you that it’s a hardware issue, it is a hardware issue that Apple itself created with a subset of machines produced. I am livid that they’ve bricked our expensive machines, conveniently just beyond the extended warranty period that I ALSO PAID FOR.

So here’s my deal: I’ve been an Apple user since the Apple II showed up on my work desk years and years ago. (Yes, I’m old-an old electrical engineer.) I’ve had numerous new personal and work issued iPhones, 4 home desktop machines, iMacs, iPads, multiple iPods, and MacBooks. If this problem is not solved within the next several months, my Apple days are over. Starting with the tablet, my migration from Apple will immediately begin. And it will be a complete migration. And it will be forever. That’s what happens, Apple, when you break a product with poor software engineering and don’t even acknowledge it to your loyal customers.

You have 4 months. Time is ticking...

Ok gang. Finally had a convo with a very nice lady from Apple. First thing, apparently they DO monitor these discussions as she specifically mentioned this is where they got my original complaint from. So someone is paying attention.

We spent about 15 minutes on the phone. She asked me the usual tech support type stuff. What was I doing when I updated to 13.4.1, had I added any other apps at the same time (no), how quick did the problem present itself (immediately). Things like that. She was pretty thorough.

We even tried to do remote diagnostics but the iPad wouldn't stay up long enough to connect.

So keep the faith all! It looks like they are (at least) investigating, although she was very clear to say they were not troubleshooting at this time, just gathering information.

By the way, I'm on a couple of different discussions about this problem, so I'm going to copy and paste this post. Just in case you think I'm some sort of bot or something.

Thanks Steve for the update. I am returning mine under the pretence of batterie replacement for diagnostic, already paid 175$ for that… I’m wondering if it’s the right thing to do at this point. I hoping it’s going to help diagnose the problem but I fear that it will be just shoved as a repair…

Please keep us update on your end.

Thanks Bhavesh. Unfortunately these changes do not work on my Pro 10.5".

I posted locally on Nextdoor yesterday to see if anyone had a Pro 10.5 that had rebooting issues. I received one reply. He has the identical model as mine, is running 13.5, and has no issues. Strange that only a subset of these machines has the reboot issue.

After painstakingly draining the battery to zero with no success, I tried carefully cleaning the lightning connector with some contact cleaner/lubricant and a clean artists brush. Inspected it with a magnifying glass and it looks fine. All 16 pins look straight and clean. Then I bit the bullet and did another factory restore in DFU mode with a genuine Apple lightning cable. (I wanted to rule out that my certified aftermarket cables weren't causing the problem. They weren't.) iPad still reboots every 3 minutes. Now up to date with IOS 13.5.1.

AppleCare contacted me again about my case number today and we're setting up another time together so they can gather additional details/data about the issue. They seem to be trying.

Same problem, iPad 10.5 rebooting every 3 minutes after installing 13.4.1 update. Problem initially fixed by reverting to 13.3.1. Unfortunately an auto update to 13.5 has returned the problem and the latest update of 13.5.1 did not fix it. I have literally tried everything, including restore in DFU mode. It is clearly a software issue if we all first experienced the problem immediately after a software udpdate.

Well I've got news from apple today about my device. First the guy on the phone was kinda rude and condescending. Then it ended up that my only option is return my device unrepaired, paying for a 600$ replacement or getting a new one.

I am very frustrated. They got my device this morning and they gave these options in the afternoon, so evidently there is no effort to diagnose the problem… just have to pay more since I'm out of warranty. We are far from the level of quality we expect from apple.

Very frustrated and disappointed.

10.5 iPad Pro. 2.5 years old and out of warranty.

Just want to update what I did. After trying everything I was able to get an in store appointment. The Genius Bar did not offer any additional help. They assessed to see if it was the battery and my battery health was perfect. If it was not it would have been $100 to replace the battery, but essentially they exchange the device.

Since the stores now take in trade-ins I ended up reading it in and received $230 US in the form of a gift card. I had some reservations about doing this and it was done pre notice of the release of iOS 14.

however a 7th ipad is almost just as good and I can use my keyboard and pencil with it.
