iMovie : Cutaway Opacity Slider

Hi

It looks like some os us have a problem with the Cutaway feature in iMovie (my version is 10.1.14):

After a few moments, the Opacity slider disappears.

I have tried pretty much everything :

  • changing the Project,
  • resetting Preferences while relaunching iMovie
  • downloading a new iMovie for the Apple Store

Nothing seems to work...

It must really be a bug because I have just found out that the slider is in fact "hidden" in the far right part of the menu (see the red arrow in the screenshot below):

So the Opacity can still be modified, but it's very tricky.

How can this bug be fixed???

Thanks in advance.

Yes, that is very interesting. I was able to replicate your situation by switching back and forth from full screen to regular screen. I started by placing a photo above the main clip and then selecting Cutaway from the overlay function options. The opacity slider displayed in its proper place and I was able to adjust the opacity with the slider. Then I switched to full screen display and when I switched back to regular screen display the opacity slider was located way to the right as in your screen shot. I couldn't get it to correct. So I closed and reopened iMovie. When I attempted to re-add the cutaway option to the overlaying photo the opacity slider appeared for a moment in its correct place and then moved way to the right again just as you had observed. I was able to correct it by removing the overlaying photo from the top timeline, placing it in the bottom timeline, and then moving it back to the overlay position and re-adding the Cutaway option. Then the Opacity slider appeared in its proper place.

Until your post I had never noticed this anomaly before. Hopefully the above procedure will work for you in solving it.

I find that if I movie the top vid to the timeline and then close iMovie, when I reopen iMovie I can move the video back on top, select it, and the Cutaway overlay opacity slider will appear in its proper place. Try following that sequence and see if it works.

I am using iMovie 10.1.12 with Mojave. This is a curious bug.

Can you explain what you mean when you say that moving the overlaying photo from top to bottom timeline "doesn't work" for you? Are you saying that you cannot move the photo or are you saying that moving and replacing it back doesn't help?

I guess we need to avoid switching back and forth to full screen when using the cutaway overlay feature.

Hi Rich,

Thanks for your comments and help.

It seems indeed that the problem appears when going to full screen mode and then going back to regular screen.

Otherwise it works fine.

Regarding the solution you propose (moving the overlaying photo from top to bottom timeline), well I must be doing something wrong because that doesn't work for me. Odd.

Sam
