I just bought a 2020 Macbook pro and have only had it for about 5 days. After being on it for not even 10 minutes, it starts to overheat, to the point where it's too hot to touch, and a fan comes on. What is causing it to overheat so quickly? I do not have a ton of applications open, usually only one.

Verify you are plugging the USBC charger into the right side of the Mac—

yes you can return it on first 14 days. My one is 4thunderbolt i7 16RAM and overheats as well. from 65ºC to 100ºC most of the times with just internet surfing. Ashamed.
Sent the first one back. Replacement/exchange should arrive today. I’ll post any updates.

Yes, the latest update of Catalina. Check for software updates in your system preferences. If your system is already up to date, then probably the issue is with something else.

Yes, you can return a customised Mac. I had to do that with an over-heating Mac Air 2020.
Right, but I just did it to see whether fans were working Ok. I set them to auto and after following the procedure, I has not been experiencing any issue and the MBP is working as expected 👍🏻
I'm placing mine on top of a cake cooling rack. That helps the heat dissipate.

It’s an Armyte adjustable stand. The fan is integral and comes with a USB lead.
Certainly scary.
