2020 Macbook Pro overheating

I just bought a 2020 Macbook pro and have only had it for about 5 days. After being on it for not even 10 minutes, it starts to overheat, to the point where it's too hot to touch, and a fan comes on. What is causing it to overheat so quickly? I do not have a ton of applications open, usually only one.

Verify you are plugging the USBC charger into the right side of the Mac—

For thermal management resetting the SMC https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295

You have free call in support, take advantage of that Customer Support (800) MY–APPLE (800–692–7753)

That said—I would not hesistate to return for a full refund, or exchange for one that works out of the box.

That is what I thought. I feel like it is 2018/19 again, when I was really close buying a new MBP but I returned it as I hated the keyboard and knew of its issues and how dismissively Apple handled the situation.

I wonder, should we get rid of our stocks with the way this company is heading? Its not a threat but a serious thought... They should just take 2 years until the next update but make it really count this time!

Intel is three years late on delivering the processors they said they would with BOTH the performance Apple wanted and the power consumption Apple wanted. This round, they got the capability to expand memory above 16GB, but not the power consumption they wanted.

Apple is fed up as well, and is leaving Intel in the dust and introducing Macs with their own custom silicon chips in the coming years.

But today we all face the same dilemma as always: Computers will always be faster, better and cheaper if we wait. But got work to do? Hold you nose and pick the least objectionable.

Even the older models didn't have this problem. I got the new MacBook Pro 2020 to replace my 2012 MacPro as well and I can tell you that if it wasn't because my 2012 was running slow I would still be using it. I had zero problems with that computer, I really don't know how much is this new model going to last. My 2020 is still overheating but not as much as it did in the beginning (or maybe I am just learning to live with it) I have the 4 ports USB-c one.

Oh my god same. I replaced the Macbook Air 2020 with the MacBook Pro 2020. Because the Macbook air was overheating and could not handle the new OS Catalina. The Macbook Pro 2020 has the SAME issues. Both within a week of ordering BOTH of them and only using basic internet and nothing fancy. Beyond disappointed with these products. It's so odd because the 2013 Macbook Pro that I had NEVER overheated. Even with heavy use. Let me know if they were able to fix this for you. Because all I got were shrugs and "well Chrome is known to do that"... I have had a $90 laptop that performed better than these on chrome so Im really confused.

No solution provided to me it has been more than a year now I have MacBook Pro 2019. They keep launching new models knowing old models have the heating problem. That’s how they become 1 trillion dollars company.

i chased them like crazy all they do repairs but the problem never went away after 2 repairs.

Return it trust me you will not regret it

IM SHOCKED!!! I can't believe they're not able to admit that there is a serious problem with these MacBooks. I got tired of dealing with support team, we tried everything they suggested and at the end the only option they gave me was to send it for repair... but why would we need to repair a product that is BRAND NEW? They never let me exchange the computer... so I'm dealing with it, although mine doesn't seem to overheat as often anymore now that I'm only using Safari.

Jess, I’m not trying to minimize the problems some people have had, but I think there are a lot of units working just fine in the wild. I have a 2019 13” MBP (i5), 16/1TB, purchased a month or so after they launched. I use it day in and out, with a whole range of tasks- nothing like video rendering etc, but Lots of demand on processor/memory. I’ve never had a noticeable thermal slowdown, even while driving two external monitors ( an ultra wife and a 1080p).

That being said, if someone gets one that doesn’t work out of the box, I hope they take it in/back. Its a valuable tool but needs to do the job. :)

Apple sold about 20 million Macs last year. If you figure 50 production weeks in a year, that means that on average, they shipped 20,000,000 ÷ 50 = 400,000 per week. Most of those were MacBooks of different flavors, but the MacBook Pro is very popular. If they work 7 days a week that is over 57,000 Macs a DAY.

The number that show up with reports of issues here is, as Apple usually says, a very small number of systems.
