You don't actually need to use a shutdown, just get KeyboardCleanTool and it will disable the keys.

Yes. It's as safe as cleaning it when it's powered down, which means don't permit any liquid to enter the keyboard. That would cause damage either way.
Hi John I dont see anything in your last response that addresses the problem. It says power down the MBA but as you already know the moment you touch the keys it powers up again. The link you sent again says power down the device. Is it OK to clean the Keyboard when the MBA is up and running?
This is not helpful. You did not tell me how to stop my MBA from restarting after I touch any key when I want to clean the keyboard. It powers back up as soon as I start cleaning the keys??

DSo there is no way to cancel this feature? Every instruction from Mac says "turn off power, then go ahead and clean the keys on the keyboard." Is it safe to clean the keys when the MacBook is powered up? Seems to go against all previous instructions.
