13" MacBook Pro 2017 - Blinking horizontal lines at the top of the screen

There are horizontal lines blinking at the top of my screen after some heavy using time.

Model: MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017, Two Thunderbolt 3 ports)

Processor 2.3 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5

macOS Catalina: version 10.15.4

I have tried reseting SMC and PRAM, but the lines were still there.

Does anyone encounter this problem as well?

The repair program seems to be only for MacBook Pro 2016, isn't it?

GUYS I HAVE IMPORTANT NEWS: I GOT FREE REPAIR

be prepared for what i am going to say, it will be unpleasant for most of you but i hope to let you get my impression and what i feel like it worked in order to get a free repair.

I write from Italy, Milan and my problem regards a MacBook Pro 2017 13'' (2 thunderbolts, no touch bar) since september 2020, i tried a lot of calls to Apple support, at least two different practices with long trials via software updates, computer formatting and many other useless solutions: the problem was definitely hardware.

I think that someone in this discussion got the keypoint: it seems a detail but i seriously think that what makes really the difference in this terrible situation is the Keyboard Service Program (https://support.apple.com/keyboard-service-program-for-mac-notebooks), i don't know why but i had a feeling that there was a correlation between this program and the other one (yes you read it correctly: THERE IS ANOTHER PROGRAM).

Yesterday, unfortunately, or now i would say fortunately, one key fell off, i also noticed the barspace having some issues when writing (sometimes double space was written with one touch) and in my mind i remember also the bottom arrow being sticky.

Without any hope i went to Apple Support and also tried again to talk about the horizontal lines problem: they recognized in 5 minutes the keyboard problem, and BE PREPARED... they also recognized the horizontal lines, they even didn't want to see it, a picture was enough for them (and by the way is the same pic you can find above this answer and that other apple workers refused) mentioning that there is "another repair program", i literally asked for the name of it and where to find it, the worker smiled and told me that "some of these programs are silent", can you imagine guys? SOME OF THESE PROGRAMS ARE SILENT. I had spent lot of time asking about this problem and the answer was always the same: there is no repair program for this.

I don't know if those of you that received this response went phisically to genius bar, i feel like this is an internal procedure that they apply in certain situations (and here i think that they apply it mostly if you have also keyboard problem), but if no information is provided on their website (like with the first repair program) maybe online they will tell you that it doesn't exist simply because they don't know it and they read the info from the website.

At the end of the day they recognized both problems and give a free repair for a total amount of almost 1000 euros, this can't be real.

I will add an extra point: to me the worker was a lot aware of the problem of horizontal lines, in 2 seconds he said that he knew well that problem and that was related to "some connectors" that had this issue and which is causing in these models sometimes horizontal, sometimes vertical lines, to me it looks that he literally said that apple knows well this problem, this strategy seems a sneaky way to minimize free repairs. YOU MUST INSIST GUYS.

I don't know, i am seriously confused, happy for me but sad for you, i want you all to insist as i did, trying the approach i pointed in this answer. The following pics proof what i am saying.

I have this problem too on my 2018 MBP. Went to an Apple store, the genius said it would be $500 without even running a diagnostic. The thing is I'm not sure it's a completely a hardware issue though, because it runs perfectly fine with safe mode and also…with bootcamp. Also, Apple Diagnostics doesn't detect any problem.

I tried to install big sur beta, the problem didn't go away. I'll see if the problem goes away by the final release of Big Sur. If it doesn't, I will only run windows on my Mac. But at some point, I'll probably buy a real windows pc, as they're far cheaper while being just as reliable, if not more.

I'm using a MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017, Two Thunderbolt 3 ports) and have the same issue. It works fine for the first 15-20mins and then the lines start to appear. It only gets wider and wider as I continue using it. Tried resetting SMC, NVRAM, ran diagnostic test (found 0 issues), booted in safe mode (issue still persisted meaning that it's not a software issue) and nothing works!

Looks like a lot of 2017 macs are having the same issue. Apple should start a service program to fix this similar to the 2016 backlight issue!

Hi! I'm having the same issue with my 2017 macbook pro 13' with 4 USB C ports. I'm a full time student heading to grad school and was expecting this computer to last at least 6-8 years. Now after 3, it's acting up. I can only see what's on my screen normally when I close my computer 1/2 way. I too would love for an apple representative to answer this question and give some answers regarding a repair program! Especially considering that there are 8+ pages of people reporting the same problem a the time of writing this.

I know this is NOT a software issue as I have connected to a desktop/ second screen and the desktop remains free of lines while my MBP does not. It's definitely a hardware/ connectivity issue.

Yes, I don't think it has anything to do with the screen itself because lines vary depending on the usage. It is not consistent; one thing I would also recommend to keep the charger plugged in. I have a strong feeling since these laptops are a couple of years old, batteries are not strong enough to keep up all the system running, and once you unplug the charger, something happens with the video card.

Same problems horizontal lines an ghosting on my Macbook pro tb 15" 2016 , Obviously flex cable related . this only happens when open the lid past 80 degrees. If I go down les that 80 degrees no problem . No problem with external monitors also so gpu is not the problem .

This laptop had every problem you can imagine, hoping sound coming from the screen hinge, sticking butterfly keys, and now this horizontal lines on screen .

I will take it today to see want apple techs have to say . I paid also apple care , but now its out of warranty.

I also have the same issue with my 2017 MacBook Pro with retina and Touch Bar it gets really hot then the horizontal lines start with over lapping I have to turn off and let cool for a long while the it goes away but reappears after about 20 to 30 minutes of use it is disappointing to have spent so much money to get a laptop that really serves no purpose if you can only use 30 minutes when we are expecting to use as long as we would like to

I have a 2017 13inch 4 port Macbook Pro, 3.1 GHz i5. The exact same problem is happening to me. A set of thin, horizontal, black lines at the top of my screen that flicker. Not visible when I take a screenshot of the area, or if I use an external monitor. I'm disgusted that Apple acknowledges this problem in the 2016 models but not the 2017 models.

I'm also facing the same issue with my 2017 13inch 4-port macbook pro! Discovered this thread only after I posted my question on it here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/251356447?page=1

The Genius Bar has said it's a chargeable repair and I'll have to replace my display. They acknowledge it's something that happens, but pretty much ends there. I understand they are also trained to deal with such complaints in this manner.

I'm feeling so frustrated after hours on the phone with apple but with no solution except to pay a hefty price to replace my entire display - with no guarantee the problem won't come back either. The other alternative I've heard is to trade it in.

I just hope apple will acknowledge this problem for the 2017 models soon :(

Hi Sarah, thanks for your advice!

I think the condition is progressing everyday. The lines showed up after 1 episode of TV show on Netflix, and it got thicker as time passed.

I’ve a friend saw my Instagram and told the same issue with her 2017 MBP and her display would go complete black after 4-6 hours of usage, even just Netflix. All began with a thin line on the top or bottom of display.
