13" MacBook Pro 2017 - Blinking horizontal lines at the top of the screen

There are horizontal lines blinking at the top of my screen after some heavy using time.

Model: MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017, Two Thunderbolt 3 ports)

Processor 2.3 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5

macOS Catalina: version 10.15.4

I have tried reseting SMC and PRAM, but the lines were still there.

Does anyone encounter this problem as well?

The repair program seems to be only for MacBook Pro 2016, isn't it?

GUYS I HAVE IMPORTANT NEWS: I GOT FREE REPAIR

be prepared for what i am going to say, it will be unpleasant for most of you but i hope to let you get my impression and what i feel like it worked in order to get a free repair.

I write from Italy, Milan and my problem regards a MacBook Pro 2017 13'' (2 thunderbolts, no touch bar) since september 2020, i tried a lot of calls to Apple support, at least two different practices with long trials via software updates, computer formatting and many other useless solutions: the problem was definitely hardware.

I think that someone in this discussion got the keypoint: it seems a detail but i seriously think that what makes really the difference in this terrible situation is the Keyboard Service Program (https://support.apple.com/keyboard-service-program-for-mac-notebooks), i don't know why but i had a feeling that there was a correlation between this program and the other one (yes you read it correctly: THERE IS ANOTHER PROGRAM).

Yesterday, unfortunately, or now i would say fortunately, one key fell off, i also noticed the barspace having some issues when writing (sometimes double space was written with one touch) and in my mind i remember also the bottom arrow being sticky.

Without any hope i went to Apple Support and also tried again to talk about the horizontal lines problem: they recognized in 5 minutes the keyboard problem, and BE PREPARED... they also recognized the horizontal lines, they even didn't want to see it, a picture was enough for them (and by the way is the same pic you can find above this answer and that other apple workers refused) mentioning that there is "another repair program", i literally asked for the name of it and where to find it, the worker smiled and told me that "some of these programs are silent", can you imagine guys? SOME OF THESE PROGRAMS ARE SILENT. I had spent lot of time asking about this problem and the answer was always the same: there is no repair program for this.

I don't know if those of you that received this response went phisically to genius bar, i feel like this is an internal procedure that they apply in certain situations (and here i think that they apply it mostly if you have also keyboard problem), but if no information is provided on their website (like with the first repair program) maybe online they will tell you that it doesn't exist simply because they don't know it and they read the info from the website.

At the end of the day they recognized both problems and give a free repair for a total amount of almost 1000 euros, this can't be real.

I will add an extra point: to me the worker was a lot aware of the problem of horizontal lines, in 2 seconds he said that he knew well that problem and that was related to "some connectors" that had this issue and which is causing in these models sometimes horizontal, sometimes vertical lines, to me it looks that he literally said that apple knows well this problem, this strategy seems a sneaky way to minimize free repairs. YOU MUST INSIST GUYS.

I don't know, i am seriously confused, happy for me but sad for you, i want you all to insist as i did, trying the approach i pointed in this answer. The following pics proof what i am saying.

I have this issue on my 2020 MBP 13” with Touch Bar. I’ve called Apple Support twice. The first time, they had me try the restarts and updating the OS. I complied even though it’s obviously a hardware issue. Then I got an appointment at an authorized service center. They said the repair would be $700. I can’t pay that right now and shouldn’t have to. Apple needs to make this right.

I have MBP 2017 non-touch bar which has developed a dark horizontal lines after using the device for some time and if I ignore the lines the lines get darker.

The only thing that I can do is shutting down the laptop and then the lines disappear but then if I use it again the liens appear again.

I hope Apple listen to us because there has been a lot of customers who are complaining about the same issue

Hi I’m also kind of having a similar issue that grew over time and has become permanent and I have send it to the service providers but lol they are saying water damage is near the Touch Bar when I never even drop water also they told me me my display will be free of cost replacement but I need to pay ₹35,000 or $480 to replace the keyboard, touchbar and trackpad and only then they will replace my display for free. Here is a photo I got from google with the exact issue since my MacBook Pro 2018 13 inch is not with me but at the service Center

Exact same problem. Horizontal lines on screen that go away when my laptop is half closed. Currently sitting on the ground with my laptop on my desk typing so I can see the screen while it's half closed. Goes without saying, not ideal situation. Never dropped or damaged my laptop so this is definitely an Apple hardware issue. 15 inch 2017 Macbook Pro with touchbar. I'm taking it to an Apple certified tech store this Saturday since the closest Apple store is 2 and a half hours away, and even that one (Charleston, SC) is STILL temporarily closed for COVID. Apple needs to admit this is a hardware issue and fix these for free. Ridiculous that my 2 year old laptop that I paid $2,000 for is now barely usable.

Issue came up since I updated my software to Catalina 2-3 weeks back. Also the 13-inch 2017 model. Gets worse after a few hours of usage but seems to disappear overnight. Will head down to the Genius Bar tomorrow to enquire. Would be ridiculous if Apple is going to make me pay for what seems to be a defect on their end. In 2020 alone, I have 1) paid and replaced my macbook power adapter, 2) replaced my AirPods Pro casing.. and now this..

Hopping on to this thread to add my voice to the people with this issue.

This issue cropped up a few days ago, the lines come and go but typically only appear after I've been using my computer for a few hours (which is quite a lot since due to my type of work).

Shutting down my computers for a few hours seems to cure the problem, but it has been showing up every day, ranging from a thin barely noticeable line to a solid black line a few centimeter thick.

I also now have thin, black horizontal lines on my 2017 MacBook Pro display - just 1 day after updating to Catalina. Yet when I called, Apple said it likely is not related to the update. It seems rather coincidental to me since there has been no damage to the machine, etc. All I did was open it up and the lines were suddenly there. I do not live close to an Apple store to get the machine checked and trouble-shooting has not helped. I am not encouraged after reading about so many other people having this issue. I would be very interested to know what you found out at the Genius Bar.

I've tried to format my Mac in order to solve it. But even during installation, black horizontal lines appeared... Look at the pictures below:

- When formatting (see two mouse pointers - one is frozen on top): https://drive.google.com/file/d/11DcGUNBYzFwW-9NI7kFgHkwLRWSYZvHy/view?usp=sharing

I have been facing this issue since MacOS High Sierra (10.13.2)

I have also started a discussion about this topic on link below:

Hello, I have the same laptop, same model, and cannot figure out what's happening.

I have exactly the same problem, can someone from Apple can do something?

Definitely, it cannot be a coincidence that the following facts are likely to happen to so many people:

  • this happens right after two years of warranty
  • this typically happens on macbook pro 16 and 17
  • people complaining about it didn't have accidental damage (are we all liars?)

In my case, i personally reported this summer to Apple Store a damaged yellow charge cable, due to probable overheating, that seems to be similar to the problem of these horizontal lines/artifacts.

They replaced my cable, without finding any anomaly in their diagnosis. 3 months later this problem, still a coincidence, guys, really???

I've spent the last three days with Apple Support trying to reboot the whole computer, a lot of time spent on doing a backup with time machine, updating to Big Sur, they tried to consider me guilty for any superficial stuff, like "you have a lot of garbage in "Other" section in archive", or "well, you probably keep the monitor on too much". WTF?!?!??!

I spent 2000 euros for a computer, i don't expect to keep it turned on for a week, but does it really depend on keeping the monitor on for 3 or 4 hours? Uh?

I am so frustrated, today is about 2 years and 1 month that i have this computer and of course, this kind of stuff happens when important things have to be done.

In this case i need my computer to work and cannot wait for a month to be repaired, because of course i bought it from MediaWorld, and after the first year i should contact them.

But, APPLE, if you have thousands of people with the same problem, why don't you do anything?

Unfortunately no other than paying 80% of laptop price or 800$ in my case. Until there is lawsuit like that in 2016 or keyboard case or iphone battery case there is no chance we will get free repair (In that case also apple denied by saying only small part of user were affected). And why would even apple care as it will cost them money and they designed in such a way whole display has to be replaced for small issue on tcon board. My friend are also facing same issue. And changing display for 800$ is just a stupid move because there is high probability the new screen will have same issue. And Apple support whoever you talk to senior or junior they will say "Sir, your laptop is out of warranty you have to pay what store demands".

I am sorry but this is the world we live. I no longer have any faith in apple and their support.
