Lightning Cables Randomly Works / Fails

Yet again I find myself getting more and more irate with Apple products.

Up until a few weeks ago, I had an original lightning cable, and two Apple Certified third party cables, all of which were working perfectly.

Then the problems started.............

The iPad Air that I use suddenly stopped charging with one of the third party cables (bought less than 2 months ago) when plugged into a mains adaptor, yet would charge if using a battery pack. The second third party cable would not charge with either power source. The original cable would now only charge if it was inserted one particular way around, using both power sources.

Even when it is showing as charging, the charge is dropping when in use. In addition, I have found that it is running out of charge significantly quicker than previously (now only around 50 minutes use for e-mail and internet browsing, not much use on video/films/games).

The iPad mini that my wife uses is also now experiencing similar problems, except that the first cable noted above WILL charge using both mains and battery pack, will charge from the mains using the second third party cable, and as per the iPad Air, will only charge with the lightning connector inserted one way round.

In all cases, the same two mains power adaptors are being used.

I have been through numerous articles that proclaim to fix this, and I have cleaned both lightning ports (no difference), tried rebooting, checked battery usage for background apps, and more recently, updated to the latest iOS version......all without success.

What is annoying is that all three cables obviously work depending on the device and power source, so it isn’t that the cables are faulty. The only thing I can think of is that Apple have managed to disable the coding built into the third party charger, but then it should not work on either iPad.

Anyone else had similar issues, and more importantly, found a workaround (other than purchasing a non-apple tablet!!).

I was actually responding to LotusPilot’s reply.

And LotusPilot’s latest reply to you correct.

Your olderiPad Air model does not support the Apple Power Delivery, fast charging protocols.

Only the newest 2019 iPad Air 3 does and all other newer, current iPad models support Apple's Power Delivery system over both USB-C and Lightning connector models, using Apple’s 18W and 30W, USB-C power/charging adapters with USB-C to Lightning cables or straight USB-C cables.

Your missive suggests that your Power Adapters (chargers) are not of Apple origin. Beware of third-party chargers - particularly those that proclaim “fast charging” capabilities - as many of these use the “QC” (Quick Charge) standard that is incompatible with Apple devices.

My suggestion, if my inference is correct, would be to substitute your existing charger for an Apple 12W Power Adapter. I intentionally suggest the 12W adapter as this has a standard USB Type-A connector - and provides adequate power for most models of iPad/iPhone. I would also suggest that, be preference for diagnostic purposes, that you use a genuine Apple cable.

You also describe instances of one or other Lightning cable only working in one orientation. Male Lightning connectors are double sided - and can be inserted in either orientation. Female Lightning connectors (ie., sockets) only have electrical connections on one side. If the cable only works in one orientation, on side of the male connector is either defective, damaged or contaminated.

Cables and connections must also be handled with some care as, although moderately robust, they can be easily damaged. Kinks and repeated bending can eventually fracture the internal conductors.

You are correct that I am not using the original adapters, but this has been the case for the last 2 years when we have had few problems with iPad charging and none at all with other devices using a mini-USB - it isn’t a case of suddenly swapping to a different adapter over the last few weeks.

This is the annoying thing that they just suddenly stopped working (or more accurately, started to work randomly!!).I have purposely avoided updating iOS too often as I found that any new update seemed to render other cables inoperative.

I am also careful when storing cables not to kink them, but wrap them around my hand to avoid this.

All in all, extremely frustrating.

LotusPilot

I just purchased a third party Anker 36W charger and Anker 6 fit. , USB-C to Lightning cable to use with my both my older, 4-year older, 12.9 inch screen iPad Pro models (much cheaper than purchasing Apple's 18W adapter and Apple’s “premium priced”, but cheaply made cables ) that uses the PD ( Power Delivery ) system and both charge my iPads in a little over 2 hours from 10%!

Amazing!

Just not sure of the long-term effects of faster charging on the rechargeable Li-ion batteries, though.

Like charging wear times/durations on rechargeable Li-ion batteries shortening their amount of recharge cycles.
