Top Gun 4k not in Dolby Atmos sound?

Why is Top Gun not in Dolby Atmos sound but video is Dolby Vision? All other streaming services (VUDU) streams it in Dolby Atmos. iTunes Dolby Vision is much better than VUDU DV

Apple TV 4K, tvOS 13

It’s not Apple that decides if/when to add Atmos for Top Gun and War of the Worlds. It’s Paramount that makes that call. It’s honestly stupid that Paramount has excluded the Atmos tracks on Apple, but I’m sure there must be “exclusivity” agreements between the studios and digital providers otherwise Apple would absolutely want it as I’m sure they have lost out on a lot of sales because of the lack of Atmos.

You mean the description your TV gives you? Well that would be expected as the ATV 4K always sends out 4K.

I've just noticed today that the Apple TV app now shows Top Gun as being 4K Dolby Vision. The bad news is that it now seems to have changed to the old transfer, in line with the Apple TV iTunes Movies app. Both apps trigger Dolby Vision, but both are HD-only (that part isn't a surprise particularly, as a lot of iTunes 4K films are playing in HD at the moment).

I think this explains why Atmos isn't available, as there is no Atmos soundtrack on the old transfer.

Somebody has messed up somewhere.

I emailed Paramount Digital yesterday asking if they were planning on adding Atmos for both Top Gun and War of the Worlds and I saw this morning they emailed me back saying....

Dear Customer,

We are working on your issue and we'll be following up as soon possible. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

At first I thought this was just boilerplate stuff and they didn’t even really look at my inquiry.... but maybe there really is an issue connecting the pseudo 4K with the lack of Atmos. Saying they are working on it makes more sense if there is a technical issue than just a boiler plate reply to whether there are plans to add Atmos.

In the iTunes Movies app, if you swipe down from the top to get chapter info etc., it displays shows HD Dolby Vision. Or, in the Apple TV app, I think if you press pause/menu it will also display the information. This is happening with a lot of 4K content at the moment due to lockdown restrictions.

Apology time though. It turns out that the version with the old Paramount logo might be correct. I asked on the Blu-ray.com forum whether the disc has the old intro or the Paramount 100 Years intro, and one guy replied saying it was the old one! I'll slap myself later.

Yeah seriously, what gives with this? I was overjoyed to hear it was finally coming to 4K, and I’d buy it in a heartbeat, especially for £7.99. But the soundtrack is so important in Top Gun, I’d be better served by the Blu Ray and its DTS Master Audio soundtrack that I already have. If it was DTS:X, like Apollo 13, I’d expect it. But there seems no reason the soundtrack wouldn’t come with the upgrade too, especially as it’s Dolby Vision. Unless it’s the only way they think anyone will buy the new Blu Ray editions.

Any sign of an update? It’s not out on UHD Blu Ray in the UK until June 8th, so they have until then before I admit defeat & either make do with what I’ve got already or waste more money & space on yet another physical version of this film (VHS, DVD, Blu Ray, Blu Ray 3D & counting...). I should really hunt down the Laserdisc version one day. 😀
