Airpods connect to my iphone se but still dont pick up the music

my AirPods (2nd Gen) are connecting to my new iPhone se, but do not pick up the sound. They work perfectly with my iPad so I know thy work. Anyone know what I might be doing wrong?

Have you tried resetting your AirPods?

No. However i have just turned my phone back on and they work. Hopefully i won't have to do that all the time, but thanks for taking the time to help me out.
