"cannot verify server identity"- but no associated email account on device

Hello,

I have searched for and read the threads on this topic on this and other forums, but my case seems to be different from others in that there is no email account related to the mail server in the message.

The error message: "Cannot Verify Server Identity The identity of 'xxx.xxxx-xxxx.xx' cannot be verified", began popping up on my iPhone 7 a couple of months ago. It would pop up randomly, sometimes once or twice a day, sometimes repeatedly at short intervals.

The odd part is that 'xxx.xxxx-xxxx.xx' is the URL of a team management website that I used frequently last year to manage a community youth sports team, but it was never a mail account or an email server. There is no associated mail account for me to apply the recommended settings adjustments to. Also, the website has abandoned that URL and is using a new one now.

A couple of weeks ago, my iPhone 7 died- one day I found it dead and it would not power up or reset. I replaced it with an iPhone 11 and, at initial boot up, the message appeared one time. I cleared it, and it has not returned.

Today I installed iOS 13.4.1 on my old iPad Pro 10.5, and the message appeared. The only email account on the iPad is my iCloud account, and is not related to 'xxx.xxxx-xxxx.xx'. It seems like it could be a virus or malicious app, but I cannot find complaints online that would support the suspicion.

Settings/General, scroll to the bottom. Look just below VPN for either Profiles or Device Management. If you find either open it and look for a profile that has a familiar name. If neither exists we need to check other options. The most likely is an app or a calendar.

Go to Settings/Passwords & Accounts, and look under Subscribed Calendars, and if you find one delete it. That’s my best guess for now. After that go to Settings/General/iPhone Storage and carefully scroll through the apps looking for one that is related. It’s easier to find apps here than by searching through the Home screens.

Thanks for the reply. I assumed that this message was mail-related because all of the 'solutions' I have found in this and other forums involved mail.

Yes, the website was used to compose and send messages to the entire-team mailing list, which was stored at the website. And yes, it is possible that the site was bookmarked at one time on my device(s), but I cannot find any bookmarks now.

You may also wish to check Settings>General>Profiles and see if there is a profile that was installed to use with the website. A mail server issue would have identified the account and/or an email address info. It seems you only use iCloud for mail on the iPad. Is that working alright? Curious more than anything. You can also go to Settings>Safari>Clear History and Website data in case there was a cookie from that website.

Pretty much any TLS (authenticated, encrypted) network connection will check certificates.

Not limited to mail.

And far more than web browsers use HTTPS (HTTP over TLS) connections into web servers.

And other not-HTTPS TLS network connections, too.

Look for a web browser client refreshing its top sites previews, or any RSS reader or such that might be used with that website.

Check in your saved iCloud passwords, too. (That shouldn't cause this, but it’s also harmless cleanup.)

Confirm there are no mail accounts. Yes, I know you stated that, but this being troubleshooting, confirm it.

Check the settings of any apps you were using to access or manage with that website.
