verify apple id

I have a replacement watch and when I try to setup and it asks me to verify my Apple ID the screen hangs for ages. I have tried repeated times on WiFi and 4g and it makes no difference. I have restarted my phone too. Any ideas?

I have tried logging out and logging back in as you suggest but i still cant log my apple id on my watch for some reason. Could it be an issue with my apple ID?

My watch is series 4 Hermes and I think it has watch IOS 6 installed but it should be the latest as i checked.

When you sign in and out on your phone that should pass the signed in info to your watch,have you tried signing in on your watch by the scribble feature?.

P.S.

The apple watch 4 is discontinued so it isn't a brand new watch,probably a refurbished one and hopefully they've taken the activation lock off it.
