Skype - can't use as "Skype wants to export key "" from keychain

I last used Skype without any problems yesterday. Today, when I open Skype on my Macbook Pro (MacOSX 10.14.6 Mojave), I am confronted with a pop-up box that says "Skype wants to expert key "<key>" from your keychain. To allow this, enter the "login" keychain password"

It then asks for a password, and you need to click "Always Allow", "Deny" or "Allow"

No matter what password I try, it doesn't let me in, and I can't use Skype any more.

I have tried deleting all the skype files from Library/Applications Support and reinstalling Skype afresh. No joy.

Can anyone fix this?

After a bunch of research and some guessing, I was able to fix or work around the problem. It's somehow related to Sign In With Apple, at least for me.

I didn't have Sign In With Apple setup, so I went to the New York Times to set up a throwaway account to force that setup. Here's what I did:

(First, quit Skype. This is a little tricky because of the insistent keychain dialog. Click in the Skype window and type Command-Q. Cancel the keychain dialog a few times, and Skype will quit. Or use Force Quit in the Apple menu.)

  • In Safari, go to nytimes.com
  • click Login
  • click Continue With Apple
  • You will then get a series of 3 or so dialogs to set up Sign In With Apple. Go through them. (If you get a dialog that just asks "Do you want to sign in with your Apple ID...", then you already have it set up, and your Skype problem is different from mine.)
  • Finally, you will get a dialog to set up your login with the New York Times. Go ahead and do that.

Afterwards, Skype behaves normally for me, and doesn't request that key any more.
