MacBook has vertical plue and pink lines and won't get past the log in screen

My MacBook (purchased around 2012) has blue and pink vertical lines and no matter what I do I can't get it past the log in screen. Have tried the usual PRAM and SMC reset keys - nothing works.

If I do a complete wipe and start again, it gets to the log in screen and then just get a grey screen. Any ideas?
