iBook G3 Unlock Kit

Ok, so I made a “kit” to bypass the iBook G3 Snow password. Want to update it to OSX Tiger and bypass the OS 9.2.2 Password. It is NOT on OSX. Anyways, I had it all setup! When I put the CD into the disc drive (it is a OSX Cheetah CD, I couldn’t find an OS9 ISO.), The computer doesn’t recognize it when i press and hold C while restarting. I remember it worked ONCE and the disc showed up on the screen next to the drive, and I clicked on the drive, meant to click on the disc. That disc broke. Had to make another. So frustrating because I have tried EVERY single password and combination, and the disc solution doesn’t work! And the FireWire will not fit into my MacBookPro (Early 2011!) I just want to get into the iBook G3 Snow, go past the password, and upgrade it to OS X Tiger! Been trying for FOUR months! I give up! What do I do!

Thanks SO MUCH!

That makes sense! X for OSX and 9 for OS9. Definitely will try to fix it! I just can’t figure out how to re enable extensions because I already restarted the computer. If I go to the OS9 Applications, the only ones in there are a graphing calculator and a note pad. Is there a website with the applications? And I remember before I locked myself out by enabling users, there was never anything OSX in there.. But I will try updating it to Cheetah 10.0.4! I really appreciate all of you

Awesome. I will look for a CD to burn (I’ve used something like 10) and I will update it to Tiger 10.4.11!

Will I have to update the computer from 10.0-10.1-10.2-10.3-10.4 as in (Cheetah to Jaguar to Puma to Panther to Tiger..) or can I just update straight to Tiger?

I will tell you the results! Thanks for being so helpful! Can’t wait to get this laptop working better!

If you did not use the installer to install OS 9 Drivers,

the the mac won't actually start in that system. A few

things could be incorrect in how that Mac is running.

With an early OS X, so long as its not updated past the early

version, then it may do OK; but could fail if the Firmware

Update was not applied before updating past Mac OS 9.1.

Usually when the firmware wasn't updated in Mac OS 9.1

with Mac running in that system, later Mac OS X has issue.

The use of OS 9 as Classic (non-boot version) may not be

correct in this early Mac; without OS 9.1 and OS 9 drivers.

Then the actual Mac OS 9 could start the mac from HDD.

A symptom was, when past early OS X (without FW update)

the graphics could fail, go black screen; harder to recover or

update the Firmware then. My G3 iMac 1999 had this issue.

So you could perhaps update the OS to maybe Puma; some

got as far as Jaguar 10.2.8 to then lose graphics. Avoid that.

Sometimes you can tell if the Firmware Update 4.1.7/4.1.8 had

been applied, by looking for the 'boot rom' update by name.

This should be in system information; to tell if FW was applied.

There is a reference to FW online, and you can read about it; may

be find resource of Apple download.. file/info from Apple archive:

iBook 4.1.4/4.1.8 Firmware Update reference/Apple

A few key pieces of these older systems are not in plain sight and

their files still exist; from an original Apple archive. But links to get

them sometimes are obscured. So are actual instructions for use!

Good luck & happy trails!🌻🌤

There's a build version of TenFourFox (custom variant of Firefox for PPC) you could try

& run; known by a different name Classilla in OS 9/Classic. May be your best option for

10.0-10.1 & anyone still running those. An information site on GitHub has many details.

• Classilla: building a Secure web browser for Mac OS 9 and the classic Macintosh

and most recent releases in another link:

http://www.floodgap.com/software/classilla/releases/

These are to be considered works-in-progress; but may only be 'snail's-pace' now.

Good luck & happy computing!🌻🙂

For OS X 10.4.11 and OS X 10.5.8 there's TenFourFox versions.

• TenFourFox: 'custom fork of Mozilla Firefox' (for older PM/PPC: G3/G4/G4)

https://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox/

Plural, there are a few of these. Expect for single CPU older

Macs w/ G4 or G3 processors, a modern web page almost

is nearly beyond their ability. The "Classilla" one can do OK

for Panther 10.3.9. ~ & then: 'TenFourFox_G3' does OK for

'Intel-based MacBook' from 2006-2007 w/ Leopard 10.5.8

or Snow Leopard 10.6.8. The early MacBooks do best with

max RAM & 7200-RPM HDD. Extra unused space for VM helps.

Good luck & happy trails!🌻🌞

READ FULL:

I guess I will update it to Tiger 10.4.11 tomorrow to use it. Classilla makes me use Classic mode. I found some free blank CDs to burn to, (I used all of them in our house 🤦🏽‍♂️).

⭐️ But before I do that

CAN I update STRAIGHT to Tiger or Do I have to update every OS in order?

Like can I update Cheetah straight to Tiger or do I have to do Cheetah then Puma then Jaguar....

Could I upgrade the iBook G3 to a G4 processor? Or G5?

PS: ..christianreal..

Some general info can be found online to give ideas on how

to figure the Firmware version already in the Mac portable.

You may need to check this and see if you can update that ~ so the Mac

won't have odd issues &/or hardware failures, if it required later firmware

version, prior to update/upgrade main Mac OS.

Several listed items on the above page are links to a Web Archive; so they

no longer are on live sites. These still may have files in-situ, for use now.

Otherwise, consider most things for old obsolete vintage Mac as archives.

http://www.macos9lives.com/smforum/

http://macintoshgarden.org/

Everymac.com has several technical pages archived & some to Apple still.

Background info, and tech data for various build models, get Mactracker.

Lowendmac also has numerous articles and hints, from the bygone era.

You may (or not) find some info by use of serial number lookup. Sites such

as powerbookmedic.com has a good SN lookup; and a parts list. My mac

has several hundred site URLs, for such things; haven't time to look again.

So hopefully you can get some traction on this area of research so the old

Macs don't rebel and fail. As they could, if incorrect software applied out of

turn, makes them go comatose!

Good luck & happy trails!🌞🍀

Ok! That’s good to know. Isn’t there a settings thing in OS 9 that shows your clock speeds and config? And I really appreciate the websites, which actually have good stuff, as I am browsing through them right now. How do I find the Configuration Specification? I asked the G3 upgrade question because I found a free iMac G5 with a bad screen.. I would just take the G5 out.. I appreciate all of you as I would be completely lost without your help! God bless all of you!!

My guess, is the Installer is all the iBook sees; and that cannot be used as startup.

Maybe the copy didn't provide necessary bits, or its not correct somehow?

While I've come in from doing work in the yard, should go out for some follow-up

effort; now that things are greening up. ~ Had a late spring in southcentral AK.

(Some 'system info' can be located under Apple icon in menu, may say something

like About this Mac; choose that and see what is says. May be several items there.)

Not sure what else to suggest at this point.🤔🌻

Just the hard drive. It doesn’t even recognize the Tiger disc... Each time I press Restart in the Tiger installation, it restarts, but it boots up to the desktop. I think I may know why. I downloaded the files from Macintosh Garden, and the post mentioned that you would have to download the files for “CD 1, 2, 3, and 4.” I know that Tiger never came on 4 CDS, but rather 4 DVDS. I burned the software to a disc, and I think it’s DVD software on a CD? I don’t know if I am right. I guess I can just make installer DVDs and buy a 6 pin to 6 pin FireWire, then install.

May 26, 2020 9:16 AM in response to K Shaffer

Oh my gosh haha that’s awesome! I didn’t even know you could do that... If I do anything, I think i’ll upgrade it to a PPC G4, found some on eBay, and I will upgrade it to the maximum. Maybe there’s a guide on that? I’ll look for a case, and I will buy an AirPort router. Oh, right. I have an AirPort card, and it says that the iBook is the Base Station, so that gives the WiFi? I need that router, right? If so, this looks promising

I kind of gave up with making installer DVDs but at least I deleted the Multi-User Prefs. I think I will bid on this listing and do Target Disc Mode to install. Thank you all for your help, I am very appreciative!

A good wireless router for vintage Macs would support at least WPA-2 security;

and easier if the unit happened to be AirPort Express. I've one that was set-up

in Leopard 10.5.8, used with Tiger 10.4.11, but can accessed & adjusted in newer

El Capitan 10.11.6. ~ Works with Mojave 10.14.6, too.

The portable laptop probably won't be all that useful as wi-fi hotspot.

(Oh, thought to mention: the image of 'G5 portable' is work-of-fiction!)

The usual upgrade path in hardware, is to get a later build Mac; however

you could try and maybe make whatever you like, to work, eventually.
