Macbook will only play sound from one airpod

Hi everyone,

When I connect my airpods to my macbook only the right plays sound.

However, if I only put the left in my ear then it plays sound fine - putting the right airpod in causes the sound in the left to stop.

I've checked on my iphone and both airpods work as normal, I've "hard" reset the airpods and reconnected them to the mac, I've restarted the mac several times, checked that I've got boh L+R channels playing (on built in, 3.5mm and wireless headphones - issuse only occurs on the airpods), and out of desperation not used them for a couple of days to see if the issue resolves itself (it didn't)

Any ideas? :(
