Forcing JPEG-only format on iPhone?

I have an iPhone SE 2020 and an iPhone 8 (both on iOS 13). I would like to ensure that all photos taken with the Camera app are JPEG only. I don't want HEIC, HEVC or Live photos. What are all the settings I need to make on my iPhone(s) and in Image Capture or Apple Photos to make sure JPEG is the only photo format used?

So far, on my own discovery, it appears I have to set the following. Is there anything else I need to set?

  • iPhone Camera - turn off Live photos
  • iPhone Settings > Camera > Preserve Settings > Disable Live Photo
  • iPhone Settings > Camera > Formats > Most Compatible

Do I also need to set anything in Photos and/or Image Capture when I import photos from the iPhones?

I do not want HEIC/HEVC/Live on the iPhones and I don't want to have conversion taking place when I import with Image Capture or Photos.

Thanks for the confirmation.

For what it's worth, turning off Live photos takes two separate settings to accomplish (see my original post). Live photos creates a 1.5-3.0 sec .mov video with every still photo; turning it off disables the .mov creation. If I want video, I'll shoot video; but I don't want video clips accompanying every still photo I take!

I'm still getting .mov pictures instead of .jpg. What more must I do?

You have to disable Live photo to get rid of the .mov files. It takes 2 steps - see my original post (above).

When Live Photo is enabled you get both a still photo + QuickTime movie file. When you disable Live Photo you only get the still photos.

...selected most compatible as instructed for JPEG but pics. remain in JPG when I save.

There are actually no differences between the JPG and JPEG formats. The only difference is the number of characters used to represent them. You can manually change the extension from one to the other without affecting the actual file in any way.

You can change it in Finder. Drag out or export the pictures to the Desktop (or a folder on the desktop), then select a file and right-click on it to see the Get Info window. Finder can also be setup to show extensions, but that makes it rather messy for everything else. I’m sure there’s a script for changing the extensions on multiple files at once, but I don’t have it. I’m not aware of a method of doing this on the iPhone directly.

You may not have a choice here, but personally I would stay away from anything that doesn’t “know” these extensions stand for the same file format.
