Catalina update moved my files to iCloud without asking me and won't give them back. What can I do?

I have 4.359 GB availabe on my hard drive. The last update of Catalina 10.15.4 put all of my docs, data, photos, dropbox to icloud which wants a monthly fee for more storage. When I try to disconnect iCloud it says all my data will be lost. What can I do?

Hello and welcome to Apple Support Communities, KTripson!

I understand your documents were moved to iCloud. I'd be happy to provide information to help you address this.

Use the steps outlined here: Add your Desktop and Documents files to iCloud Drive

"Turn off Desktop and Documents

When you turn off Desktop & Documents Folders, your files stay in iCloud Drive and a new Desktop and Documents folder is created on your Mac in the home folder. You can move files from iCloud Drive to your Mac as you need them, or select all of your files and drag them to the place you want to keep them.

  1. From your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Preferences. Click Apple ID, then click iCloud. On macOS Mojave or earlier, choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, then click iCloud.
  2. Next to iCloud Drive, click Options.
  3. Deselect Desktop & Documents Folders.
  4. Click Done."

Have a great day!

My question was how to remove my documents from iCloud.

The answer to your question is in that reply.

Also from the article linked in that reply.

Your Dropbox files would not have been moved unless they were nested inside of your iCloud Drive, Desktop or Documents folder.
