The Macbook first freezes and after that the fans wil blow on max speed for a very short time followed by a black screen. The Macbook shows a popup at reboot with the error as stated above.

The device is a MacBook Pro 16" 2019 2,6 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i7.

What can I do to solve this error? I already ran a diagnostic mode (by pushing the 'D' while booting).

CATERR is one of thousands of catastrophic errors.

It is impossible to determine which error has occurred with a complete panic report. This thread is already too crowded to provide individual assistance for panic report analysis.

--> START A NEW DISCUSSION

Panic Reports are stored at:

/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports

If you copy and paste that string into:

Finder > Go menu > Go to Folder

... it will take you to where those reports are stored.

They are named with Date&Time and end in .panic

You can post the entire report here, by using the “additional text” Icon in the reply header (looks like a paper with writing).

Please don’t post more about 20 lines of any other types of reports — they are interminable, and any information useful for this purpose is on the first screenful.

I am getting the same exact issue with a brand new 2020 Imac. I am frustrated because I paid over $3k for this spec'd out computer and I've seen it crash on me more times in less than a week, that my old macbook pro crashed in an entire year. Issue seems to happen when I have my thunderbolt 3 hard drive running backups or accessing data (I use a lot of video editing tools) I sent back the drive for a new one, hoping it's the drive and not this new machine.

I have a new Macbook Pro 16" I purchased in Sept 2020. It gets the panic CATERR. constantly. This happens on a clean build of Catalina and Big Sur. I have built my image several times with only apple software no third party software.

The problem occurs when the computer is sleeping. I know this because when it happens, I hear the startup chime in Big Sur. I have spoken with Apple on several occasions and even had then escalate to engineering. However, I have not received any fix or resolution and the last person I spoke with never got back to me about the ~400MB reports file I uploaded for engineering. This seems to be a reoccurring problem experienced by many users. Apple please provide a solution or a refund. I spent almost $3500 on this computer and it should not have this issue. GET IT FIXED!

My issue persists even if I wipe the SSD and reinstall the OS (Catalina or Big Sur). I had a call with apple today and I was told that the Engineers are reviewing error reports and will be providing a solution of update when the issue is understood. Apple did not provide any details in writing about the CATERR panic, solution, or timeframe. I have requested that this issue be escalated to upper management and that I receive periodic calls with or without updates to let me know that Apple is working toward a resolution. I have also asked for a replacement machine in hopes that that may resolve the issue. Currently, I am not willing to load my CAD and Software to begin using this machine out of fear that I will lose my work. So, it will sit idle until Apple resolves the CATERR panic.

Same thing has been happening to my new Mac Mini 2018 since I got it a month ago. At least once a day it happens at the most inopportune times. I can be just browsing with Safari or writing an email in Mail app and then my cursor will freeze, keyboard won't respond, and in a few seconds it restarts on its own. Very frustrating.

This is in addition to not unlocking with my Apple Watch and a laggy Magic Mouse 2 that has been unusable with it. My Apple Watch unlocks my iMac and MacBook Pro every time and same Magic Mouse 2 works fine with both. Aaarghhh. I hate issues like this.

@macboyinsf -

I have the same machine as you - a Mac Mini 2018 with the i7 and 32GB of RAM - that I just bought a few months ago and am having seemingly random kernel panics. It can happen while I'm working it hard, while it's sitting idle overnight or anywhere in between. I hate these random-type issues because they're so difficult to narrow down!

This may seem like a random question - but how do you have your Mini placed on your table/desk? I have mine mounted vertically underneath the desk and I've always wondered if my issue is related to heat. But then again, I've read that there are places like Mac Mini Colo that run them vertically 24/7/365. (https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Eg17SvkU0AABBKE?format=jpg&name=large) Plus, my fan is almost never audible, so I convince myself that if it was getting too hot, the fan would sound like a plane engine all the time.

Did you upgrade the RAM in yours after purchase?

Thanks for sharing the Apple Watch/Unlock trouble you're having. It's really frustrating because Apple Watch Unlock works perfectly with my MacBook Pro here (working from home) and on my work iMac 5K at the office (when I'm there on Fridays).

Let me know how it goes with the new RAM sticks and I'll be sure to share any new information I discover on my end.

Good Luck!!!

Well, it's been a week since I put the new RAM in and the Mini has been powered on the entire time - no panics. I'm not saying it's solved yet, but it's looking positive. I'd like to let it go longer without restarting, but I've got a pending software update and my audio has gone a little garbly (another issue I've been having, but might be related to using an external DAC), which I can only fix with a restart. But, I'm feeling like there usually would've been a panic by now. I've used it for all the same kind of things in the past week, and she's been as good as gold in that regard.

If I can go another week panic-free, I might have to call this a solved problem. We'll see.

I was just about to post and you beat me to it. Since my last post on 9-21-20, I haven't had a single panic either. I haven't done anything at all to my Mac; no installs or uninstalls. My OS is still on 10.15.6 as it was then. No explanations but I can't complain either.

On another note, last Saturday, I retired my Airport Extreme network and replaced it with an Amplifi Alien Router and Mesh Point; super easy to set up. Anyway, after the install, which took about 15 minutes, my Apple Watch unlock of my Mac Mini immediately started to work. It had not been working at all and I had given up trying to find a solution. Again, I had done nothing else to my Mac to make this happen. I'm left to wonder if the Airport Extreme somehow interfered with the Apple Watch unlock feature. Again, no complaint from me. It's been working 100% so I'm ecstatic.

Fingers crossed for both of us!
